Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a
surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
"There were tears in those eyes before the machete tore his head apart."

On my 10th birthday, my family gathered at Kamakhya Mandir for a puja.

Ma asked me to play somewhere when my mulishness to see the puja began, and i see a buffalo coloured with
turmeric and sindoor started acting restlessly, two people were holding his neck with ropes from both sides
when ...... .blood spews everywhere leaving behind a headless body moving around. I screamed and cried,
never have I seen such rituals.

I was awestruck, “Am I having a bad dream or is that real? How can something so fanatical be part of religion? Do
I need to be such a zealot to be religious?”

That red podium haunts me to this day.

After being ignored by every elder, my questions were answered by Param dada, the only one to take me
seriously.

When I was 15, I began reading and participating in religious arguments everywhere I could in order to have a
better understanding of other viewpoints. I wanted my parents to reconsider their religious practices, and was
able to persuade them to do so.

On my 16th birthday, my Didamoni(grandmother) travelled to Silchar to organize a kirtan prayer for me. We all
drove to an Ashram, where a well-known priest from West Bengal performed Kirtan for my well being.

An expectant mother and her mother-in-law arrived to pray for a son. At that ashram, such requests were not
unusual, but this time his teaching was imparted aloud.

Considering her past life sins as described by Prabhuji(priest), her children could be born a
homosexual. Quoting some unheard Vedic rules to prove his viewpoints, I was curious to know how the Vedic
slokas that were intended to show the path to God became the conclusive testament of whatever he predicts.

I stood up and I asked, "If homosexuality is such a sin then why do Hindus still believe in powers and insights of
non-binary gender? Are you demeaning them by misquoting slokas or are these vedas so contradicting ?”.

Immediately, he responded, " How dare you say such a thing to me in front of my disciples. Will you teach me my
Vedas now?". Recalling his crimson eyes and the raised eyebrows above them still gives me cold shivers.

My grandmother took the microphone, "Hey Prabhu, he's in control of a spirit, please guide him, guide him to
Moksha...". She disparaged me as if I had somehow harmed her God by this question.

I didn’t know how to react, never in my life have I felt so undeserving of myself. I acted as if something entered
my eye, rubbing my eyes to hide my tears. I feel goosebumps remembering my grandma holding my arms and
taking me out of the white gates.

I locked myself in my room and I called dada who talked with me for hours and then confronted my grandmother.
On that day, my identity and my relationship with God were clarified finally.

I remained the black sheep of my family. However, Param dada always seemed to be on my side.

A year has passed by and Param Dada is in the ICU. It was my birthday tommorow and ma woke me up and
informed me about this, I was unusually calm.

A peculiar chilly air blew across my body late at night. When talking about the fanatical traditions at the
mandir, he said, "God is a product of man, who design and execute moral rules whose source should not be
confined by natural laws,"

The moments that he stood along my side or when he explained why cancer made him bald. I broke down in
tears, and the coldness gradually dissipated.

Calling myself a so-called Gnostic Athiest, I begged for someone's presence , the clock read 12'O clock and I
joined my hands for him, "God, please save him.".

Community Disruption
COVID 19 had impacted me both emotionally and academically in alot of ways. I have lost many close
friends and these past years were nothing less than a nightmare.

I had been preparing for NTSE for more than a year under a coaching institute. The result of 1st stage came with
celebrations at my coaching institute, being the only one to qualify from South Assam.

The pandemic delayed the Stage 2 exam for a year, I was still preparing for it until the dates were announced.

On my way to the exam centre in Guwahati, I was stopped by the security for my body temperature and was not
allowed to write the exams for which I had now been preparing for more than 2 years.

I was shifted to Govt. Medical Hospital in Silchar to be quarantined. My aunt joined me after a few days and I had
seen her lose her breath in front of me. Those terrible times still haunt me.

However, after coming out of the hospital I started my First covid delivery service for quarantined people, Covid
Care.

Briefly and specifically tell why you have decided to apply to Centre?
When looking out for colleges I had spent hours and hours researching about the right fit colleges that can provide
me with the experiences I want.

A well, rounded liberal arts education can help me get a broader foundational knowledge to think across domains.
Also, I found the alumni network of centre college diverse and influential which can help me to further advance my
career and have a meaningful life.

I would love to spend a few weeks abroad studying art restoration in France. and complete writing a professional
investment analysis report for a publicly-traded company under ECO 476.

Centre offers me opportunities to spend my time working on an artistic project under the John C. Young Scholars
program or spend my summer under a professor to study the markets.

At centre, my favourite courses integrate classrooms and community work as in ECO 352 and the uncrowded
classrooms encourage me to ask doubts openly.

After talking with the students of centre college I found the assistance provided by centre college for jobs, part-
time work, internships and research opportunities fascinating. They have talked about the close-knit community
and the benefits that come with it.

I want to spend my 4 years in this institution and enjoy the perks of being a colonel and come out with a centre
college degree to succeed in the world.
