blackish-green stone. A blanket of (2), dark ivy crawled over the stone, up and (3) the rows of
brown bricks. Curling around the (4) windows and doorways, the ivy crept nearly to the second
storey. Joan felt very uneasy as she stared at the building.
A long curved stone stairway and two tall turrets on either side of the house (5) Joan of a
castle in a fairy tale. It was like a castle (6) evil spell. A peaked grey roof and a tall, spindly
chimney (7) the unsettling impression. Joan approached the door bell and pressed it. After about
ten minutes, the door open and she came face to face with a white-haired lady.

PASSAGE 4
1 Here, hold this chair steady while I climb up, Soo Keong said to me as 1
he jumped nimbly onto the table and then clambered up onto the chair on top
of it. He was going to change the tube of light which had fused. Already it was
getting dark in the room, and we needed the light to study.
2 I held the chair and handed the tube to him. Suddenly, the chair wobbled, 5
and Soo Keong lost his balance and fell. The glass tube that he was holding
came crashing down. I managed to step aside before the tube fell.
3 Soo Keong lay unconscious on the floor. There was a big gash on his
forehead, and blood was oozing out of t. I sponged his forehead and dressed
the wound as best I could. I dared not move him as I did not know whether he 10
had broken any bones.
4 There was no one else at home at that time. Soo Keongs family had gone
to the movies. I tried to call the hospital to get an ambulance, but the telephone
was out of order. I put my head against Soo Keongs chest. Well, at least he was
still breathing! But I knew that he was badly hurt and that I had to get help fast. 15
5 I ran to the house next door, but it was dark and quiet. There was no
response when I knocked on the door. I was getting quite frantic. How on earth
could I get Soo Keong to the hospital, which was about six kilometres away?
Page 95
6 I walked out to the main road and stood under a lamp-post, hoping to thumb
a lift to the nearest telephone booth. I waved frantically, but several motorists 20
passed by without even giving me so much as a glance. At last, one kind
motorcyclist stopped.
7 Where do you want to go? he asked.
8 My friend is badly hurt in that house over there, I blurted out. He needs
help. I told him what had happened. On hearing this, he offered to go to get 25
help immediately and told me to go back to the house to look after Soo Keong.
Page 96
9 When I got back, Soo Keong was stirring into consciousness. He moaned
in pain. Dont move. I said. Help is on the way!
10 Indeed it was. Half an hour later, I heard the comforting wail of the siren of
an ambulance. The motorcyclist had also come along. The attendants lifted 30
Soo Keong onto a stretcher. The doctor told me that I had done a good job in
dressing the wound.
11 The ambulance sped to the hospital. Relieved, I turned to thank the motorcyclist
who had helped me.

PASSAGE 5
1 I was travelling in an old van bound for my home in Jasin. It was late 1
evening and as expected the whole stretch of road was deserted and everything
was quiet except for the monotonous rattling and humming of the van. Together
with me were three of my colleagues, John, Usup and Kim Seng.
2 Just as the van was lumbering along the narrow road, a loud thud was heard 5
a short distance away. Our driver, Usup, continued, undaunted. Suddenly, with a
loud screech of brakes, the van came to an abrupt halt, throwing us off our seats.
We looked out and to our horror we saw a tree lying across the road. We knew
our journey would be delayed and since it would be dark soon, we were slightly
worried. 10
3 We got down to move the tree. We had hardly reached the tree when four
men with guns came out from nowhere and ordered us to line up with our hands
raised above our heads. One of the men gave orders to the others while he
pointed his gun at us grimly. Two of the men checked the van while a third one
ran his hands through our pockets. As the men appeared to be ruthless, we did 15
not protest. They took our identity cards.
4 The leader was agitated when he found out that we did not have much cash
and valuables on us. He started to behave threateningly. There were beads of
cold sweat on our faces.
5 Suddenly, Usup drew out a gun and shot the leader. It was evident that the 20
robbers had failed to make a thorough check on Usup. He had his automatic
stuck to the waistband of his jeans. The leader clutched at his side and twitched
in pain as he fell to the ground. The others were stunned and stood motionless.
Taking this opportunity, we pounced on them and grabbed their rifles. Having
Page 101
overpowered them, we huddled them together and tied them with a rope which 25
we got from the van. Then, we forced them into the van and drove to the nearest
police station, after having removed the tree
Page 102
6 At the police station, we were informed that the four men were high on the
wanted list. They had been causing fear among the villagers in Kampung Bekoh.
The police thanked us for our help and informed us that there was a reward of 30
RM10,000 to he collected for the capture of those men, dead or alive.

PASSAGE 6
If you are out of shape or have existing health problems, you should always seek your doctors
advice before starting on an exercising regime. Bear in mind that you can have too much of a
good thing; over exercising, exercising with an incorrect technique or too much weight loss can
harm bone development and cause injuries. To avoid strain, sprains and other injuries, follow
these recommendations:
Warming up before exercise helps to avoid muscle injuries by preparing your body for activity.
Stretching is especially important in the morning when muscles are less flexible and injuries are
more likely.
Cooling down after exercising is advisable rather than stopping abruptly. Doing a few gentle
stretches prevents your body from feeling aches and pains later.
Exercise within your limits. Build up slowly, pace yourself and listen to your body; pain is a
warning sign, letting you know that something is wrong so never ignore or try to work through it.
Avoid sudden twisting movements that cause you to sharply bend or twist your back. It can
place excessive strain on your spine, especially if you are out of shape.
Water is important to maintain your core temperature during exercise and prevent fatigue and
muscle cramps. So stay hydrated.
Remember to wear supportive shoes. Cushioned, flexible soles help to absorb shocks and
prevent joint injury.

PASSAGE 7.
Ugly
: Author Unknown, Source Unknown
Everyone in the apartment complex I lived in knew who Ugly was. Ugly was the
resident tomcat. Ugly loved three things in this world: fighting, eating garbage, and shall we
say, love.
The combination of these things combined with a life spent outside had their effect on
Ugly. To start with, he had only one eye, and where the other should have been was a gaping
hole. He was also missing his ear on the same side, his left foot has appeared to have been
badly broken at one time, and had healed at an unnatural angle, making him look like he was
always turning the corner.
His tail has long age been lost, leaving only the smallest stub, which he would
constantly jerk and twitch. Ugly would have been a dark gray tabby striped-type, except for
the sores covering his head, neck, and even his shoulders with thick, yellowing scabs. Every
time someone saw Ugly there was the same reaction. Thats one UGLY cat!!
All the children were warned not to touch him, the adults threw rocks at him, hosed
him down, and squirted him when he tried to come in their homes, or shut his paws in the
door when he would not leave. Ugly always had the same reaction. If you turned the hose on
him, he would stand there, getting soaked until you gave up and quit. If you threw things at
him, he would curl his lanky body around your feet in forgiveness.
Whenever he spied children, he would come running and meowing frantically and
bump his head against their hands, begging for their love. If ever someone picked him up he
would immediately begin suckling on your shirt, earrings, whatever he could find.
One day Ugly shared his love with the neighbours huskies. They did not respond
kindly, and Ugly was badly mauled. From my apartment I could hear his screams and barks,
and I tried to rush to his aid. By the time I got to where he was laying, it was apparent Uglys
sad life was almost at an end.
Ugly lay in a wet circle, his back legs and lower back twisted grossly out of shape, a
gaping tear in the white strip of fur that ran down his front. As I picked him up and tried to
carry him home I could hear him wheezing and gasping, and could feel him struggling. I must
Page 110
be hurting him terribly, I thought. Then I felt a familiar tugging, sucking sensation on my ear.
Page 111
Ugly, in so much pain, suffering and obviously dying was trying to suckle my ear. I
pulled him closer to me, and he bumped the palm of my hand with his head, then he turned
his one golden eye towards me, and I could hear the distinct sound of purring. Even in the
greatest pain, that ugly battle scarred cat was asking only for a little affection, perhaps some
compassion.
At that moment I thought Ugly was the most beautiful, loving creature I had ever
seen. Never once did he try to bite or scratch me, or even try to get away from me, or
struggle in any way. Ugly just looked up at me completely trusting in me to relieve his pain.
Ugly died in my arms before I could get inside, but I sat and held him for a long time
afterwards, thinking about how one scarred, deformed little stray could so alter my opinion
about what it means to have true pureness of spirit, to love so totally and truly.
Ugly taught me more about giving and compassion than a thousand books, lectures,
or talk show specials ever could, and for that I will always be thankful. He had been scarred
on the outside, but I was scarred on the inside, and it was time for me to move on and learn
to love truly and deeply.
It was time to give my all to those I cared for. Many people want to be richer, more
successful, well liked, beautiful, but for me, I will always try to be like Ugly.

PASSAGE 8
Read the passage below and answer the questions.
Tigers are found in India and most of the countries of South-East Asia. They live in forests
and grassy plains, where there are plenty of other animals for them to hunt for food. If you see a
tiger in the zoo, you may think its coat is brightly coloured and easily seen, but in the jungle
grassland where it lives, a tiger is hard to see.
The sunlight shining through leaves and branches makes patches of bright light and shadow.
A tigers golden coloured coat, with its dark stripes, mixes so well into these patches of bright
light and shadow that it is not easily seen. When it walks through the long forest grass, it is also
hard to see, for its hair is the same colour as the blades yellowish grass and patches of deep
shadow.
This camouflage, as well we call it, is very important because tigers are hunters and catch
other animals for their food. If the animals could see the tiger coming, they would quickly
escape. It has strong sharp teeth which it uses for seizing and eating animals it catches. A tigers
main food is deer, wild boars, monkeys and other small animals, but it will also kill cows.
A tiger is also very strong and if it kills a deer or a cow, it will often drag the dead animal
several hundred yards to the shelter of some bushes, where it can eat its meal in peace. Tigers
usually hunt and eat at night, and during the daytime they lie resting, hidden in the long grass.
Tigers do not like great heat and when it is very hot they find a resting place by a river or in
some wet ground.
A tiger watches carefully for danger as it drinks at the river. It is an excellent swimmer and can
cross fast-flowing rivers easily. It will dive into the river to escape from its enemies, or other
dangers such as forest fires. The tiger which is five or six feet long when fully grown is a big
relative of the cats which we keep in our homes as pets. When a tiger is attacked it uses its teeth
and claws to defend itself, but, unlike our cats, it is not a very good climber.

PASSAGE 9
Read the following passage carefully.
Mother was getting ready to go shopping and I who was watching television pleaded with
Mother. May I come along, please? I dont think you should come. Firstly, you havent done
your homework; secondly you havent had your bath, and finally you have been bullying
Rosita. Rosita was my younger sister; she was only four and I was eight. Oh Ma, please, I
can explain all that. I can have my bath after we return. Then I can do my homework.
Moreover, tomorrow is a holiday-its Labour Day. So if I feel tired I can do my homework
tomorrow. And about Rosita, you know she always takes my things and leaving them all over
the house, and as a result I am always getting into trouble; so I didnt want to lend her my toy,
thats all.
After listening to my lengthy explanation, Mother found it difficult to leave me behind, so she
took me along.
We first went to the supermarket. There Mother asked me to fetch a cart and I gladly did so
because I loved pushing the cart. Isnt it fun! Mother bought all the groceries she needed but
she didnt forget me; she bought me a tin of chocolates. I wasnt satisfied with the chocolates. I
wanted ice-cream. But you already got chocolates, said Mother. But Rosita had an ice-cream
when you took her out the other day and she told me about it. Mother had to give in. I have a
way of getting what I wanted.
After the supermarket, we went to a store where a sale was on. There we spent some time
looking around and were about to leave when Mother spotted a nice blouse for herself. She
didnt need a blouse but this was pretty and on sale, it was cheap so she bought it. Arent you
going to buy me a new suit? I asked. No, you dont need one. But you dont need a blouse
either and you bought one. But you are growing, Roslan! You remember the expensive suit I
Page 120
bought for you a few months ago, you outgrew it so fast and as a result I had to give it away. I
wasnt sure I understood but I agreed.
Next, we went to a restaurant to have a snack. I was tired and so was Mother. Mother had
cakes and coffee but I of course wanted an ice-cream! That is the second ice-cream for the
day, said Mother but she let me have it because it was a hot day.
Later, we went to a toy shop to look for a birthday present for Zarina, our neighbours
daughter and also my best friend. She was going to be seven next week and my sister and I
were invited to the party.
At last the shopping was over and while we were waiting for taxi, Mother said, Rosita is
going to be disappointed I didnt get her anything. Neither did you get me anything special, so
its quite all right. Moreover the tin of chocolates is there. I replied. Soon a taxi came and
Mother and I returned home.

Some facts about Jamaica
Jamaica is an island located in the Caribbean Sea, off the coast of Mexico and
south of Florida U.S.A,
It is dominated by mountain and green forests. It is mainly an agricultural country,
its chief export being sugar. It has a tropical climate with rain throughout the year,
heaviest from May to October. Its temperature is fairly high around 30 C.
Jamaica lies in the hurricane belt and therefore experiences, sometimes powerful
with damaging effects
Nature
We have neither Summer nor Winter
Neither Autumn nor Spring
We have instead the days
When the gold sun shines on the lush green canefields-
Magnificently.
The days when the rain beats like bullets on the roofs
And there is no sound but the swish of water in the
gullies
And trees struggling in the high Jamaica winds.
Also there are the days when leaves fade from off
guango trees
And the reaped canefields lie bare and fallow to the sun.
But best of all there are the days when the mango and
the logwood blossom
When the bushes are full of the sound of bees and the
scent of honey,
When the tall grass sways and shivers to the slightest
breath of air,
When the buttercups have paved the earth with yellow
stars
And beauty comes suddenly and the rains have gone.

MEANING OF THE POEM NATURE BY H.D.CARBERRY
LITERAL MEANING
The beauty of the Jamaican sun and fields comes alive in the poem. During the hot
season, the sun is bright and strong and the canes are tall, thick and green.
On some days, rains come down in torrents and fall mercilessly on Jamaican houses.
Gullies and streams quickly fill up with water. The wind blows strongly and trees feel the
onslaught.
Then the weather changes again and all is calm. It is warm again and the canes are cut.
Fields lie barren after the harvest. Then there is a burst of energy and rejuvenation of life.
The plants and insects come out in abundance and this is the best time of the year.
IMPLIED MEANING
The implied meaning is close to the literal meaning. The whole poem is a celebration of
nature.
Similarly there is a celebration of life. Nature too goes through its time of growth, survival
against the elements and even death, then a time of idleness and then suddenly a burst of
beauty when nature blossoms and is fruitful. This is the natural progression of time and
nature too is subject to the changes. This is the natural cycle.
The pride the poet feels for his country is obvious. He loves the land where he was born
and the poem is a tribute to its beauty.

Through the poem, the poet expresses her anxiety about the events going on in her
country.
It is a time of turbulent events.
The nation is going through a crisis.
The village is quiet and deserted and the rice fields are barren.
Young men are unemployed and desperate.
The political situation is plagued by disunity.
War has broken out and people are being killed.
In the midst of all this turbulence, a man is playing his flute.
Page 161
He is lost in his own world of music.
The speaker asks him the question Are you still playing your flute? Three times.
She wonders how he can continue playing the flute with all the turbulence going on in the

Another is to listen to the man playing the flute.
THEMES :
Decision Making
Life is about the choices we make willingly or unwillingly. The persona has moved out of
the village and followed a different course in life. The person whom she loves has chosen to
remain in the village. He, being a musician and artist has chosen the serene life while she has
moved on. She feels the emptiness but life does not permit her to go back. She can only
recollect the precious time of the past.
Sacrifice
Life is also about making sacrifices for other people. She has family commitments and
has chosen a different life for the sake of her family. He, perhaps, has chosen to sacrifice
spending time with his loved one for the sake of his art because it flourishes in the peace of
the countryside. Both sides have given up what is dear to them but only time will tell whether it
is worth it.
Page 162
It is very possible that in life we cannot make the choices we want to make.
The circumstances we live in dictate to us and we have to acquiesce. You cannot
always follow your heart as much as you would want to.
Page 163
Are You Still Playing Your Flute?
Are you still playing your flute?
When there is hardly time for our love
I am feeling guilty
To be longing for your song
The melody concealed in the slim hollow
Of the bamboo
Uncovered by the breath of an artist
Composed by his fingers
Blown by the wind
To the depth of my heart.

The Chapters in brief
Chapter 1
Granda and Rory are at Dr.Nicols clinic for Grandas check up. The old man is not very happy
as he feels the doctor will only give him more pills and ask him to stop smoking. A young mother
with her child enters the clinic and Granda gallantly opens the door for them. He starts to talk to
the baby. Suddenly, a few people start to smell smoke and a girl shouts in panic that Granda is
on fire. Granda due to his forgetfulness has left his pipe inside his pocket. Rory quickly grabs a
vase from a desk and throws the water on Granda. The old man is upset with Rory about being
wet. Dr.Nicol says that Granda is lucky to have Rory as his grandson. He wants to get home
help for them, especially to reduce Rorys burden. Granda protests but Rory who does many
things for Granda does not mind someone to help him look after the old man. As Rory and
Granda leave the clinic, Dr.Nicol makes a call.
Chapter 2
Rorys homework is missing and he is worried his teacher, Mrs.Foley will be angry with him for
forgetting his homework again. Granda who has the habit of putting way Rorys homework
somewhere safe, has mistakenly put his homework jotter into the rubbish chute. He has put the
rubbish inside his bag. Rory is horrified as he has to come up with an excuse for Mrs. Foley
again. He asks his best friend Darren for some ideas. Rory tells Mrs.Foley he lost his homework.
She is surprised as Rory has come up with some imaginative excuses in the past. Mrs.Foley
asks Rory whether Granda will be coming for the Parents Night. Rory gets upset and he
defends Granda by saying that Granda never misses it. Mrs.Foley tells Rory to stay back during
lunch time and finish his homework. He refuses and informs her that he has to go back home
because Granda has prepared lunch and waiting for him. The truth is, Rory is the one who has
to get lunch for Granda. He runs to a bakery and buys two hot pies.

says he doesnt like football anymore. Darren makes a sexist joke by telling that Rory is turning
into a girl. Mary Bailey, a football player and a feisty girl kicks Darren. Rory tells Darren that he
cant go for football practice because there is no one to look after Granda. When Darren
suggests that Granda should be in a home, Rory gets very angry. He knows that Granda hates
and is scared of old folks home. He also realizes that if Granda is put in a home he will not have
anyone to take care of him. As Parents Night nears, Rory is worried how Granda will behave
Page 180
there. So he tries to teach Granda to act properly, especially with Mrs.Foley. When Rory asks
about his father, Granda gets very angry. He dislikes his son for abandoning Rory and his
mother when Rory was a baby.
Page 181

misbehave or say something offensive, especially to Mrs. Foley. Granda goes to the toilet and
returns without doing anything to embarrass himself or Rory like what he has done in the past.
Granda and Rory meet Mrs. Foley. As they are talking, Granda goes very near to Mrs. Foley and
tells her about her moustache. To make matters worse, he indirectly says Rory is the one who
told him about Mrs. Foleys moustache. Rory is horrified. Grandas coat catches fire and Mrs.
Foleys coat which was beside his also catches fire. Granda acts as if he is not responsible and
finds the whole thing funny and exciting. Mrs. Foley looks at Granda angrily and Rory is worried
about the consequences.
Chapter 5
Granda is considered a hero by Darren and Rorys schoolmates for almost burning down the
school. Rory, on the other hand, is quite worried because Granda is responsible for the fire.
Darren tells Rory that his mother thought it could have been very dangerous if the fire had
happened at night. She also felt that Rorys was too young to carry heavy responsibilities. Rory
tells that it is his responsibility as there is no one else. Rory and Granda meet Val Jessup, a
social worker for the first time. She tells them that it was Dr. Nicol who informed her about them.
Granda is not too happy about it but Rory thinks otherwise. As Granda tucks Rory to bed, Rory
remembers how his grandfather has been taking care of him. Rory tells Mrs.Foley that they have
a social worker and getting a home help too. Mrs. Foley is pleased. When Rory goes to the
bakery to buy lunch, the baker tells him something has happened at his flats. Rory runs there but
he is stopped by a policeman. Rory gets very angry when his neighbour, Mrs. MacKay says bad
things about Granda. The Policeman assures Rory Granda is alright and he has been taken to
the hospital. Rory is puzzled when the policeman tells him that Granda had left the chip pan on.
Chapter 6
Rory is taken to the hospital by a policewoman and is very worried about Grandas condition. He
is scared that Grand might die. The male nurse reassures Rory that Granda will be alright but
that he needs to be looked after. Rory without hesitating says he will do it. Rory senses
something wrong when he sees the glance that is passed between the nurse and the
policewoman. Rory is very sad when he sees Granda hooked to machines and face covered
with oxygen mask. Rory worries Granda might die. The nurse reassures him that he will be ok.
Page 182
Rory prays to God to save Granda. Val Jessup tells him that he has to stay at the childrens
home, Castle Street as there is no one to take care of him. Rory protests as he is
Page 183
terrified of the place but Val tells him that it is only for a few nights and the place and workers
there are ok. Rory has no choice but to go and he consoles himself that it is maybe Gods plan.
Chapter 7
Castle Street looks like a place in a ghost story to Rory. He is welcomed by Tony, one of the
children of the home. He introduces Rory to the other children Jackie, Georgie, and Tom. They
make him feel welcome and offer him food. Rory is still not comfortable with them and the place.
He tells them he will only be there until Granda leaves the hospital. Rory meets Tess who is very
different from the other children. She is wild, aggressive and angry, and doesnt like Rory. She
attacks him for sitting at her place. Rory goes to bed with mixed emotions and cant sleep well.
Chapter 8
Rory wonders how the children at Castle Street can be happy as they get ready to go to school
because he cant stand the place. He goes for breakfast and sees Tess there. He stays far from
her as she stares at him. Jackie tells him she goes everywhere by taxi and she has a private
tutor. The other children are not happy about this special treatment for Tess. Val Jessup and
Rory go to the hospital. He is excited to see Granda up and about. Granda is very happy to see
him too. Rory asks Granda what happened at the flats. He is touched to hear that Granda was
trying to help with lunch. When Granda finds out that Rory is staying at Castle Street, he is very
upset because he knows that the place is Rorys nightmare just as Rachnadar is his. The nurse
and Val calm him down. Granda assures Rory everything will be alright once he gets out of the
hospital. But Rory notices the look that passes between the nurse and Val when Granda says
that. He again senses something is not right and he is scared.
Chapter 9
Rory and Val go to the flat to get his clothes. Rory also takes Grandas medicine although Val
tells him the hospital will not allow outside medicine. When Val tells him that he doesnt have to
think about painting the flat, Rory is confused and worried. He doesnt want to stay at Castle
Street any longer, mainly because of Tess. His relationship with Tess gets worse by the day as
her dislike for him increases. Tony explains that Tesss behaviour is due to no one wanting her.
Rory doesnt feel sorry for her. Rory visits Granda at the hospital. He complains that he was
interviewed by a lady asking him daft questions. Val informs Rory that she has something
important to tell him the next day. He is scared.
Page 184
Chapter 10
Mrs. Foley is concerned for Rorys and Grandas well-being. She wants to know how Rory is
coping at Castle Street. When Rory tells her about Tess, she says Rory should not be there.
Rory informs her that he will be out once Granda is out of the hospital but Mrs.Foley is not very
enthusiastic. Rory is shocked when Darren tells him that Mrs.Foley may want to adopt him. He
feels it will not happen as he thinks Granda will be out of hospital soon. Darren is not so sure
about this and Rory feels uneasy. He goes to the hospital to see Granda but is shocked to see
his bed empty. Rory thinks Granda is dead.
Chapter 11
Rory is heartbroken as he thinks Granda is dead. The nurses try to calm him. One of them tell
him that Granda is alive and that he has been moved. This calms Rory. Val arrives and nurse
Maureen leaves. The look that passes between them makes Rory uneasy. He demands to know
where Granda is. Val tells him that Granda is not fit enough to go home. Rory finally realizes that
Granda has been taken to Rachnadar.
Chapter 12
Rory is very sad when he sees Granda in tears because Granda has always been strong for
both of them. Rory and Granda hug each other in tears. Granda tells Rory that he thought he
was being taken home; instead he was brought to Rachnadar. He wants Rory to take him home.
Rory tearfully answers he cant. He goes back to Castle Street and sees Tess behaving badly.
He scolds her and tells her to shut up. She attacks and punches him. Rory doesnt punch back
because she is girl. Rory realizes that Grandas condition is getting worse by the day. Granda
says certain things that scare him. Val tries to console Rory by saying that Granda will be alright
once he gets used to Rachnadar, but he is not convinced. Rory cant sleep that night as his
thoughts are of Granda. He remembers Granda saying that if he was young he will run away.
Rory decides to run away with Granda.
Chapter 13
Rory tells Darren of his plan to run away. Darren helps him by telling him to use his mothers
caravan to hide. He promises not to tell anyone about Rorys plan. Even Granda doesnt know
about the escape plan. He quietly packs both his and Grandas things. When everything is
ready, Rory sneaks into Rachnadar one night to rescue Granda. He makes sure all Grandas
Page 185
things like his teeth and hearing aid is taken. He makes sure the old man has his shoes on. Rory
finally tells Granda that he is taking him out of Rachnadar.
Page 186
Chapter 14
Everything goes on smoothly, even though Granda once in a while is noisy. No one notices them
until they reach the train station, and in the carriage as well. After they get down the train, they
continue their journey to Darrens mums caravan. The journey is difficult on the old man but he
maintains a high spirit. Rory can see the strain on Grandas face and he prays that Granda will
survive. They finally reach the caravan and it is comfortable. Granda cries and tells Rory how
lucky he is to have a grandson like him; a grandson who has done all this for him. Rory could not
tell Granda that he has done this for both of them because he is overcome by emotion.
Rachnadar and Castle Street are nightmares for both of them. Rory feels he has done the right
thing and he promises to himself that he will never let anyone separate them again.
Chapter 15
Darren wakes up the next day and checks for any SMS from Darren. There is none. Granda and
Rory have breakfast. They are happy, share jokes and go for a walk. They decide to go fishing.
Granda is happy and back to his old self again. Granda catches a big fish and both of them are
overjoyed. They are so happy that they almost dont realize the sound of footsteps.
Chapter 16
Rory realizes some people are coming towards them. He doesnt want, neither him nor Granda
to be caught and taken back to Castle Street and Rachnadar. A boy and his father approach
them. The situation is tense. They ask each other questions and Granda rudely tells them off.
Granda calls them tinkers. Rory doesnt approve Granda calling them tinkers. The strangers
leave. Rory learns many new things about his Granda. He realizes Granda has many hidden
talents. He also sees that Granda has got better physically and mentally. But Rory knows sooner
or later they have to move on as people will definitely be looking for them. Then, he receives a
message from Darren asking them to run as the police have found out where they are.
Chapter 17
Rory wakes Granda and tells him they have to leave. Rory quickly packs all the things they need
like Grandas medicine, food and clothes. It is night time and cold and Rory is very worried. He
has to make sure Granda is alright and at the same time hide from the police.
Page 187
He doesnt know where to go either. They run to the bushes as they hear the police siren. They
are puzzled why the police are after them. Granda tells Rory to run off without him but Rory
refuses as they are a team. The police begin to spread out and as they are nearing Rory and
Granda, they are caught and pulled from behind and told to keep quiet. The man tells them that
he wants to help them.
Chapter 18
Rory trusts the men but Granda is suspicious of their intention. But they have no choice other
than follow the men who seem to know the place well. Rory is worried whether he is doing the
right thing. They reach an open space where there is a caravan. A boy named Tyrone welcomes
them. Granda is tired and Rory gives him his pills and some water. Rory asks the boy and his
mother why they are helping them. The mother says that the police would have caught them if
they didnt. Rory and Granda find out that they have become famous and are on the television
daily. Granda is curious to know why they are helping even though he had called them tinkers.
The mother says that they are doing it for Rory. Granda is at ease and starts making jokes
again. Rory feels safe for the moment.
Chapter 19
The next morning Rory and Granda enjoy a good breakfast prepared by Ruby. Rory feels
embarrassed that Granda had behaved rudely towards Sammy and Tyrone the first time they
met. Granda is embarrassed too. Val Jessup and Darrens mother appear on television. Darrens

Granda and he accepts. Sammy and Bernie help to come up with an escape plan. They ask
Rory and Grand to go to Glasgow by train and stay with their family there. To be safe, Sammy
tells them to sit in separate coaches. All of them find it difficult to say goodbye. Granda cries and
Rory feels sick to part ways with Sammy, Ruby and Tyrone.
Chapter 23
On the train, Rory and Granda sit separately and try not to look at each other. Rory thinks that a

and demands to know where the old man is. The lemonade boy hopes to become famous for
catching them. He refuses to let Rory go despite his plea. Suddenly, Granda hits the boy on his
head with a bottle. The boy falls down in pain. Rory tells Granda that he has killed the boy but
Granda says the boy will be alright. Granda holds Rory by the hand and drags him. Rory was
panicking and tells Granda he doesnt know where to go. Granda tells him he knows. He decides
to steal a car.
Chapter 24
Rory is shocked with Grandas idea. Granda tells him he is going to hot-wire a car. Rory feels
that they have broken many laws. Granda doesnt think so and says hitting the boy was self
defence. And as fugitives they have to do whatever they can to be free. Rory is amazed to see
Grandas change and ability. He steals a car and drives on the back roads. Rory thinks that they
have become hardened criminals and are in deep trouble. Granda stops the car and takes a
nap.

Nicola. Granda wakes up in the afternoon in a confused state. He tells Rory that he doesnt hate
his son but he cant accept that he had lied to him. Granda tells Rory that they dont need him.
Rory gets a call from Nicola telling him that her mother has called the police. She wants them to
leave immediately as the police are on their way.
Chapter 31
Nicola explains her mother called the police because she is worried about Grandas health and
feels sorry for Rory. Rory is too worried to bother about Normas reasons. He wakes Granda
and tells him that they have to leave. Rory agrees to Grandas request of not going to Liverpool
and starts packing their belongings and some food. They escape on foot. Rory can see that
Granda is not well and exhausted. They have no choice but to run as the police will soon come
looking for them. The night is cold. After a police car passes by, they rest for a while at a bus
shelter. Granda doesnt look good at all. Although Rory is worried, Granda insists they go one.
He even makes jokes. They sleep for a while. When Rory tries to wake Granda, he doesnt
move, snore or breathe. Rory thinks Granda is dead.
Chapter 32
Rory screams and runs looking for help. He cant bear the thought that Granda has died. He
blames himself. He finds a house and the couple recognize Rory as the boy in the news. The
man and Rory drive towards the bus shelter. Rory finds Granda fallen off the bench. The man
calls for the ambulance and both the police and ambulance arrive soon after. Rory wants to
follow Granda in the ambulance but is told that someone wants to talk to him. The man tells him
that he is his father.
Chapter 33
Granda doesnt die. Rory stays with his fathers family. He meets his fathers wife Karen and two
daughters, Rhonda and Ava. Granda likes all of them but still treats his son, badly. Jeff
Page 194
apologizes to Granda and Rory for his mistakes. He tells Rory he was young, stupid and scared
to come back home. Rory and Granda have settled down in a flat near Jeffs house.
Page 195
They now have home helps and care workers to cater to their needs. Rory never forgot all the
people who had helped him and Granda. He keeps in touch with some of them. Although
Grandas health has worsened, Rory is happy everything has turned out well, and most
importantly he has found his family.

her. He is willing to sacrifice his happiness to take care of Granda. He is willing to give up football
because there is no one to take care of the old man.
22. In my opinion, Granda is unique man. He has many hidden talents. For example he knows how to
start a car without keys. He has great knowledge about old movies and movie stars. He is popular with
women as he knows how to praise them. He is also very popular with Rorys friends because they like his
jokes, stories and easy going manner. Although he has his shortcomings, he shows great love and
responsibility towards Rory. He is the one who took care of him after his father left him when he was a
baby. Granda also loves freedom and being independent as he is willing to go through a lot of pain to be
together with Rory during their escape adventure.
23. I think he is an irresponsible person. I say so because he left his baby and the mother when they
needed him most. It is because of him Rorys mother died of heartbreak and Rory grew up without a
Page 234
father. What is worse is that he never contacted Rory when he was growing up. But at the end he
realizes his mistakes and asks for forgiveness from Rory and Granda. He admits he was stupid and
irresponsible. By admitting his mistakes and apologizing, he finally becomes a responsible man.
Page 235
24. My favourite character is Rory because he is intelligent, brave and responsible. What makes him
special is, he is still a young boy. His intelligence can be seen when he quickly throws the water from a
vase on Granda to put out the fire. His quick thinking most probably saved Granda from serious injuries.
His detailed plan to rescue Granda also shows how intelligent he is.
He is also brave because he is daring enough to plan and carry out his rescue of Granda. He succeeds.
During their escape, he and Granda face many problems but Rory bravely faces the challenges and
overcomes them.
He shows great responsibility for a young boy. He makes sure all Grandas needs are taken care of. He
makes sure Granda takes his pills. He makes sure Granda has his teeth and hearing aid wherever they go.
It is he who gets lunch for Granda daily.
These are the reasons why Rory is my favourite character.
25. My least favourite character is Tess. I dislike her because she is aggressive, violent and selfish. She is
too aggressive and angry for a young girl. She screams and throws tantrums when she doesnt get what
she wants. For example when someone changes the channel on the television
She punches Rory and attacks him. She also attacks the other children at Castle Street. Her violence
makes her dangerous
She is also selfish because she doesnt bother about other peoples feelings. Just because Rory sits on
her seat, she attacks him.
These are the reasons why Tess is my least favourite character.
Page 236
7. It is unforgettable because it shows how forgetful Granda is and how responsible and quick thinking
Rory is to put out the fire. The incident is also quite funny.
Page 237
8. Rory took a vase from the receptionist desk and threw the water on Granda. His action shows how
intelligent, quick thinking and responsible he is.
9. He called the social service, most probably Val Jessup. He did this because he was worried about Rory
and Granda, especially after Grandas pocket caught fire in his clinic. He also feels sorry for Rory.
10. He mistakenly throws it into the rubbish chute and put the rubbish into his bag.
11. The aliens took it. Dogs were fighting over it. Seagulls flew past and grabbed it from his hands
12. Rory had to go to the bakery and buy two hot pies for Granda as he depends on Rory to get him
lunch daily.
13. He cant play football because no one is there to take care of Granda when he goes for football
practice.
14. He gets angry because his son, Jeff left Rory and his mother and ran away from her. Rorys mother
died of a broken heart. Granda was very fond of her.
15. Marilyn Manroe, Grace Kelly, John Wayne and Tyrone Power
16. He forgets to put out the fire on his pipe and puts it in his pocket. He always misplaces Rorys
homework, like when he mistakenly throws Rorys homework into the rubbish chute.
17. Rorys love for Granda can be seen when Rory cries and screams for his Granda when he sees Granda
is not on his bed in the hospital. He thinks that Granda is dead. Another evidence, is when Granda stops
breathing at the bus shelter, Rory is at lost and heartbroken and he runs aimlessly looking for help.
18. Grandas love for Rory can be seen when Granda blames himself for Rorys stay in Castle Street. He is
in tears. The fact that Granda has been taking care of Rory since he was a baby after being abandoned by
his father is proof that Granda loves Rory.
Page 238
19. One stranger who is kind towards Rory and Granda is Ruby. She is Sammys wife and Tyrones
mother. She really treats them well. She gives them food and provides a comfortable place for them to
sleep. She is supportive of their cause and treats them like familiy. She jokes with them and puts up with
Grandas flirting. Another person is Sammy. Although Granda was rude to him when they first met,
Sammy helps them. Despite being called a tinker, Sammy rescues Granda and Rory when they are almost
caught by the police. Sammy also introduces them to his brother and his family. He drives them around
the countryside. Finally he buys them train ticket to continue their journey.
20. The most important incident in the story is Rorys rescue of Granda from Rachnadar. It is this incident
which starts their journey and adventure. The incident increases the bond and love that Rory and Granda
have for each other. The incident also teaches, especially Rory about kindness of strangers, about
helping without expecting anything in return. For example, Ruby refuses money when Rory offers her for
helping them. Granda also learns not to judge and discriminate others who are different. Granda calls
Sammy and Tyrone tinkers but it is they who help him and Rory. This incident also reunites Granda, Rory
and Jeff. Rory gets a father and Granda gets his son back. They become a whole family again.
