Sometimes the earth moves between the sun and the moon. Then the earth’s shadow falls on
the moon; no light from the sun can then reach the moon. The moon gets dark because it cannot
reflect the sun’s light. We call this an eclipse of the moon.
Does the sun even get dark during the day? It does so when the moon hides it. Sometimes the
moon goes in front of the sun. We can watch it edge when it slowly crosses the sun’s disc. The moon
is hiding it completely. That is total eclipse of the sun. Sometimes only part of the sun’s disc is
hidden. That is not a total eclipse; it is a partial eclipse of the sun.

Charles Robert Darwin was born in Shrewsbury, England, on 12 th February 1809. He came from
a wealthy family and never had to work. He studied medicine and theology. In 1831 he graduated
from Cambridge University with a degree in theology.
He began a career as a scientist quite by chance. On 27 th December 1821, 22 year-old Charles
Darwin joined the crew of HMS Beagle as a naturalist. The five-year expedition collected
hydrographic, geologic, and meteorologic data from South America and many other regions around
the world. Darwin’s own observation on this voyage led to his theory of natural selection.
2020/usp/sma/Page 11 of 12
Charles Darwin was greatly influenced by the geologist Adam Sedgwick and naturalist John
Henslow in his development of the theory of natural selection, which was to become the foundation
concept supporting the theory of evolution. Darwin’s theory holds that environmental effects lead to
varying degrees of reproductive success in individuals and groups of organisms. Natural selection
tends to promote adaptation in organisms when necessary for survival. This revolutionary theory
was published in 1859 in Darwin’s now famous On the Origin of Species by Mean of Natural
Selection.

honest, I just had some difficulties in preparing for it, especially in Science. There are extra les sons in
my school and I take them all. But, I feel that they don’t help. I’m still confused in solving Science
