Dutchess County (www.dutchesstourism.com)

Dutchess County is located just north of New York City, along the Hudson River. New Yorkers
can take a car or train up to the county. The summer season has been strong, says Mary Kay
Vrba, director of Dutchess County Tourism. No doubt the region got a boost from the high profile
wedding of Chelsea Clinton, who married in the picturesque Rhinebeck, NY.
As the season changes, the Dutchess County Fair will take place at the end of August, but the
cooler season will bring a variety of seasonal delights. “I’m looking forward to the fall,” said Ms. Vrba.
Autumn is traditionally harvest season for the many wineries and farms in the region, and Vrba
says that it’s a great time to taste wine, cheese or a fresh apple. Ms. Vrba says visiting the pastoral

take place in Philadelphia, and fortunately for New Yorkers, the City of Brotherly
Love is just a short car, train or bus ride away.
The rivalry is one of the most historic grudges in all of sports. It began 120 years
ago when the two teams battled at West Point in 1890. The game did not happen
for only a total of 10 years in the entire span. Philadelphia has long been the neutral
site that hosted the game (the Navy is based in Annapolis), beginning in 1899, and
a number of different stadiums have been used.
In addition to the action on the field, visitors can enjoy the historic and modern
features of Philadelphia. Independence Hall, Carpenters’ Hall, Christ Church and
the Second Bank of the United States “duck boats” from World War II and open-air
trolleys.
For a more contemporary experience, visit Rittenhouse Row, which has stores
from Ralph Lauren, Burberry and Tiffany (but don’t tell Fifth Avenue that!). There’s
also Jeweler’s Row, the country’s first diamond district and Antique Row, which
holds priceless items.
Philadelphia’s dining options are second only to New York. A variety of
ethnicities and styles are available. Many restaurants are also in historic buildings,

Habitat for Humanity - New York City

The New York City branch of the humanitarian group was founded in 1984
and builds homes in all five boroughs. Recent projects include a 41-unit condo
building in Brownsville, Brooklyn, a green building that was LEED certified.
Over 10,000 volunteer for the great cause, helping with actual construction,
advocating and donating to the group. (http://www.habitatnyc.org)

New York Cares

New York Cares is one of the city’s leading volunteer organizations, which
work to match volunteers with nonprofits that have the most need. Over 370
volunteer organizations nationwide have adopted the same model, and over
48,000 people volunteer locally with the group. Campaigns include corporate
volunteering, disaster preparedness, youth service and holiday coat and gift
drives. (http://www.newyorkcares.org/)

Partnership for Parks

The group is a joint program of the City Parks Foundation and the city’s
Department of Parks & Recreation. It was founded in 1995 to help New Yorkers
beautify and help the city’s parks thrive. The group collaborates with citizens to
maintain parks, print park publications and secure grants to fund parks. (http://
www.partnershipsforparks.org)

Food Bank for New York City

The Bank has been working to end hunger in the city for the last 27 years. It
focuses on food distribution, financial empowerment and nutritional education,
helped by research. With 3.3 million New Yorkers struggling to get food, the Food
Bank’s mission is critical. Citizens can help by donating money, food, shopping
at online vendors that support the Bank, and volunteering to serve meals or staff
events. (www.foodbanknyc.org)
