Period 4
The Animals Struggle
The monkeys at the Folsom Zoo live in
cages with little entertainment and a lack of
problems to solve that would improve their
intelligence. Feeding is the same every day,
without challenge, unlike the wild. By
creating a Monkey Maze Feeder, we will
provide them with a challenge in feeding,
giving them a way to snack throughout the
day, entertain themselves, and have some
fun with a new toy.
Research on the Macaques
Facts About Macaques

Originate from Africa & Asia

Average size is 15 pounds
Success Criteria
Eat fruits/vegetables and
primate chow We designed a 6x4x10 inch
Chow is to 1 inch size product, sizable for the
Macaques to grab and shake-
which will allow the food to go
through the maze.
We designed a creative
product that will be a fun and
complex way for the
Macaques to feed.
Project Description
The Monkey Maze Feeder is a rectangular prism that will be hanging from the
ceiling of the Macaques cage. It will be at a reachable level while they stand
atop the ramps. The Macaque will grab the feeder with their hands and shake it
back and forth in order for the food to travel through this maze. Once the food
reaches the bottom slot, they will be able to grab the food from the
compartment with their hands.

This feeder may be a bit difficult at first for the Macaques to figure out, but that
is what we are trying to achieve with this design. We want entertain and
challenge the monkeys in order to improve their intelligence.
Project Description Continued..
One of our goals with this design was to limit the amount of times the zoo keepers
would have to refill the feeder. The zoo keeper will have to unscrew the cap off of the
top and then pour the Macaques food pellets into it. The top layer of the maze has a
variety of different size holes in order to decrease the rate at which the food falls
through the slots. The holes control the amount of food that will go through the maze.

The overall size of the Monkey Maze Feeder is 6x4x10 inches.

To install this feeder into the Macaques cage, we will need a chain to tie around two
posts that are located on the top of the feeder, and then tie it to the ceiling of the cage.
