Savoury Soft Beef Cake (Gadon)

Savoury soft beef cake (Gadon) is typical Mid-Javanese dish.


It has unique savoury taste and totally different with usual
cake. Gadon is good for person who got sore throat or
stomach-ache, because this food has soft texture but has a lot
of great nutrients. Also, this soft beef cake is good for your
diet because it contains fewer calories than the sweet cake.
Beside of that the beef cake is very suitable to feed the crowd
and very easy to make. The taste of brandy makes this cake
certainly irresistible.

Ingredients:

The main ingredients:


300 grams ground beef

2 eggs
2 salam leaves

2 kaffir lime leaves, thinly sliced

4 red chilies, thinly sliced or whole bird-eye chilies

100 ml thick coconut milk

Banana leaves for wrapping (in modern cooking,


we can use aluminum foil)

For the smooth ground spice mix:


1/2-1 teaspoon coriander seeds

4 shallots

3 cloves garlic

A pinch of salt

Method:
1. Mix well the ground beef with coconut milk and egg
2. Add the smooth ground spice mix

3. Add in salam leaves and kaffir-lime leaves

4. Take one table-spoon-full of the meat-mix and put it on a piece of banana leaf

5. Top the meat with the chili slice (if you want it to have a kick)

6. Wrap the meat-mix with the banana leaf and seal it with a tooth pick (some people
even use stappler)
7. Arrange the wrapped meat- mix on a steamer and steam for about 30 minutes or
until well cooked

8. Serve warm

Notes:
You can substitute the banana leaves with aluminum foil for the wrap or use casserole
dish as a container to steam the meat-mix.
