Mission Statement
The mission of Cougar-to-Cougar is to empower underclassmen to reach their full potential by building positive
relationships.

Mentor Statement:
We will always have your best interest at heart. We will value your opinions. Engage you in new joys here at school . We
strive to be someone you can count on. Most importantly someone you can look up too.

Program Policies
Recruitment
Applications, parent permission form, and references must be submitted no later than the 4 weeks prior to the
last day of school.

Inquiry
Mentor applicants will be notified of their application status within one week of application due date. Applicants
that pass the first round will be required to schedule an interview with a club sponsor.

Eligibility
Mentor eligibility requirements include grade level and no prior disciplinary placements. Mentors must be a
Junior or Senior and in good standing with Canyon High School administration. Students are required to submit
an application, 3 references, and interview for a mentor position.

Screening
After applications and references are reviewed, students will be interviewed by the Cougar-to-Cougar sponsor
and members of the executive board.

Interview questions will consist of the following:


List 3 core values
What volunteer experience do you have?
What leadership experience do you have?
Up to this point, what are you most proud of in your life?
What is your biggest weakness?

Training
Mentors will attend a mandatory training within the first 2 weeks of school. This training will outline policies,
procedures, and character curriculum covered throughout the school year.

Mentor-Mentee Matching
Mentors are matched with mentees by counselors, administrators, and/or sponsor.

The program coordinator will determine the suitability based on the following criteria:
Preferences of the mentor, mentee, and/or parent/guardian
Common interests

Similar personalities

Match Support and Supervision Policy

Recognition Policy
Participating students and sponsors will determine what recognitions should be made at the end of the first
school year. Recognitions should be codified and archived for future reference.

Record-Keeping
Sponsors will keep records of the following:
Mentor attendance
Including communication about absences
Mentee attendance
Mentor-mentee pairings
Volunteer hours
Goals and Achievements
Awards and Recognitions

Confidentiality

Transportation

Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect

Unacceptable Behavior
Mentors will be immediately removed from Cougar-to-Cougar for committing the following infractions:
CDC placement
Drugs, alcohol, or tobacco use
Bullying
Sexual Harassment

Excessive Absences:
3 absences (excused or unexcused) will result in dismissal from Cougar-to-Cougar
Absences will adhere to a strike policy
1st Strike- conversation
2nd Strike- conversation and parent contact
3rd Strike- Out
Sponsor and 1 board member must be notified at least 24 hours in advance if you are going to miss
meeting
