BRIJ SERIES
Mild, nonionic surfactants
The BRIJ SERIES of surfactants are polyoxyethylene vegetable-based fatty ethers
derived from lauryl, cetyl, stearyl and oleyl alcohols. These materials are naturally
derived, mild, and virtually odorless nonionic surfactants, and as a series, offer a
diverse set of emulsifying characteristics allowing them to confer unique bodying,
spreading and stabilizing properties to emulsions. Since the BRIJ surfactants
manifest synergistic behavior, they can achieve even greater effects when used
together. The extraordinary synergism shown by BRIJ blends is particularly evident
in the case of difficult-to-formulate emulsions, such as clear gel microemulsions and
alkali-based hair straighteners.

General StructureEthoxylates

where R represents the fatty alcohol moiety and
n represents the number of moles of ethylene oxide
As ethoxylates, the BRIJ surfactants are classified as ethers. As such, they acquire
certain behavioral characteristics inherent to these compounds. While the presence
of the ether linkage in their structure confers exceptional stability to the BRIJS, the
absence of an ester linkage virtually eliminates any tendency for them to hydrolyze.
BRIJ surfactants are stable to acids and alkalis beyond the pH range that ester type
emulsifiers can withstand. Hence, the BRIJ SERIES are useful for emulsifying fats
and oils in highly acidic or alkaline media. The series contains both hydrophilic and
lipophilic products. Depending on the HLB, BRIJ surfactants can be used to form
either oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions or water-in-oil (W/O) emulsions, solubilize oils
and improve wetting. Their performance as solubilizers is considered outstanding.
These products are widely used in personal care, fiber finish and HI&I cleaning, crop
protection, paints and coatings, adhesives and other industrial applications.
BRIJ SERIES
Physical Properties
The BRIJ surfactants are produced by reacting ethylene oxide (EO) with a fatty
moiety for example, oleyl alcohol, for the BRIJ O Range, and stearyl alcohol, for
the BRIJ S Range. The number suffix in the name indicates the level of ethoxylation
(i.e., BRIJ O3 contains 3 moles of EO). Like all ethoxylates, these materials display
solubility according to their degree of ethoxylation, with water solubility increasing
with increasing levels of ethoxylation.
Thus, the higher ethoxylates, like BRIJ O10 or BRIJ S10, are soluble in water and
insoluble in mineral oil and other non-polar solvents. The lower ethoxylates, like BRIJ
O3 or BRIJ S2 are soluble in mineral oil and other non-polar oils, but are insoluble in
water. As such, they are lipophilic and have emollient, as well as emulsifying,
properties.
The BRIJ surfactants are stable over a wide pH range, giving them the versatility to
be used in a variety of oil-in-water systems. They are compatible with other nonionic
surfactants, as well as with most anionic, cationic and ester surfactants, and are fully
biodegradable.
