5E Lesson Plan
Teacher: Ms. Torres
Date: September 18, 2018
Subject area / course / grade level: Geometry 7th grade
Duration: 45 Minutes
Materials:
Manila Folder Cut-outs of different shapes, measuring tape, calculators, pencil, notebook, construction
paper.
TEKS/SEs: 9c: Determine the area of composite figures containing combinations of rectangles, squares,
parallelograms, trapezoids, triangles, semicircles, and quarter circles.
Lesson objective(s): To find the area of different geometric shapes, then transitioning to finding the area of
composite shapes.
Differentiation strategies to meet diverse learner needs: Visual, auditory and kinesthetic teaching; for all
learning styles.
ENGAGEMENT 3 minutes Posters with formulas will be up for students to see.
Students will choose a geometric shape, with their own dimensions and they will find the area of their
shape, this will be done in the student notebook.
EXPLORATION (10 minutes)
In their group table, students will be given 5 different shapes (made out of manila folders) of different sizes
(sizes are in feet), and as a group they will have to create a geometric shape with all of those shapes, and
together they will find the total area of their creation, by measuring tape.
EXPLANATION 10 Minutes
Teacher will remind students how to find the area of geometric shapes such as a circle, semi-circle, triangle,
rectangle, square, and trapezoid. As teacher explains and gives the formulas to finding the area of these
shapes, students will write in a construction paper (that will be a tri-fold) the area of each shape, and an
example, and glue their tri-fold on their daily notebook.
ELABORATION 15 Minutes
Students will work as a pair (teacher & student role) to finish their own, separate worksheet.
EVALUATION 5 Minutes
Students will work individually to find the area of a figure, outside a figure.
