Foundations:

Throughout observation and interviews with my students I have come to realize that they enjoy building
activities. This activity will let the students use their creativity to construct a ghost stack. One of the
major goals I am working on in the classroom is improvement of social skills and working together to
complete a task. Children will work together and experience failures and have success with an activity
that will be interesting and engaging. The lesson will also engage higher level thinking. The higher group
will receive minimal guidance in construction, yet some modeling might be needed for interaction and
working together. Academically we are working on counting to twenty this activity will allow for us to
practice measuring and counting.

Lesson introduction (anticipatory set):

Prior to the lesson we will watch a you tube video called 5 little ghosts. Once the video is over teacher
will model acceptable and unacceptable behaviors in the center. As well as set guidelines and
expectations for center.

Procedure:

1. Divide students into four groups of four. (groups will be determined bases on ability level)
2. Teacher will give each student a cup. (this is to ensure that all students participate)
3. Students will take turns placing cups together to make a tower after a few trials teacher will
instruct students to measure the tower using cubes.
4. For groups 1,2,3 teacher will assist in recording answers group four will be asked to complete
the third step of recording their results.

Differentiation:

This lesson is tiered by complexity. The complexity of the lesson will be determined by groups and how
much teacher guidance is needed to complete the task. Group one may only be able to construct a small
tower and need assistance counting to 5 whereas group 4 will receive minimal guidance with the task
and will also be challenged to complete a third step of recording their results. Although the process is
not outlined for the students each group will receive different levels of assistance in working together
along with counting and measuring.

Acceleration or enrichment for gifted learners:

The rubric for this lesson is created with a section for gifted learners, my goal for this lesson is for the
students to work together and complete a twostep direction task. To appeal to the multiple learning
style students, have the opportunity to apply counting and writing skills. The activity was also designed
to challenge my higher-level thinkers to come up with strategies to build and create as there will be no
rules on how to construct the towers. The major guideline that may prove to be a struggle is the concept
of working together and taking turns.

Technology used:

You tube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyIoGYQHOFA- This video will get the students
attention. The video talks about the ghosts being friends. Which is a concept we will discuss briefly when
we role play correct expectations of center.

Closure:

After all students have completed the center we will review the results and see who built the tallest
tower.
