Context/ Previous school year, students have learned about grammar and punctuation. However, grammar and punctuation are
Rationale still often misused that people still make grammar and punctuation errors in writing. As students get into groups of 3
or 4, they will act as agents. As agents, they will read a paragraph that the teacher will hand out. As a group, the
agents will be assigned a grammatical/punctuation error (highlighted) that the teacher has assigned to each group.
Then, they will complete a CSI Log that for a grammatical/punctuation error that includes the crime, the evidence of
the crime, the causes of it, and the corrective or justice. In addition, they will state the law (the rule) for that particular
sentence. The teacher will show an example of it before students fill out the CSI Log.

This lesson is important because it will help students to be able to identify common grammar and punctuation
mistakes that are often seen in a writing in an interactive way that gets students to be motivated and engaged. The
teacher will demonstrate how this activity will go so students understand what they are doing. After the end of this
activity, the goal is for students to become experts after they learn how to use and write with proper grammar and
punctuation.
Central Focus The purpose of this lesson is to build upon students knowledge of grammar and punctuation. Students will learn to
proofread and edit an error they come across in a given sentence by completing a CSI Log for a model error. This
lesson will serve students to be actively engaged as they complete a CSI Log to help them be proficient at
proofreading and identifying common grammar and punctuation mistakes that are often made in writing.

3 min Bell Ringer At the beginning of class, students will do a quickwrite answering
the question, Why is it important to use correct punctuation and
grammar for writing?
After students finish up their quickwrites, the teacher will ask them
to share their responses if they wish to share.

10 min CSI Log Activity: Mini-Lesson The teacher will introduce the CSI Log activity and briefly go
through each components included in the CSI Log
Before students fill out the log, the teacher will show an
example of a CSI Log to get them an idea on how to
proceed to this activity.
The teacher will hand out a sheet of paragraph to each group and
assign a group of an error:
Group 1 ---> Im been eating
Group 2 ----> week, Ive
Group 3 -----> tired of the cough
Then, students in their small groups will start the activity as they will
collaboratively work with each other.
As students are completing this activity, the teacher will
walk around to make sure students are in track and to see if
they have any questions.

2 min Wrap Up
After students complete their log with their small groups, the teacher
will ask to complete their journal entry reflecting on the CSI Log
activity they did. If not finished during class, students will finish it
for homework and turn it in the following day.
