Intro to Waste

o Following think, pair, share time, as a class come up with a definition of waste
based on the conversations

o During discussion specify that we will be focusing on manmade waste
o We will go through the slides together and answering the questions from the
booklet as a group
o Once the section for today has been completed, students will fill out Waste
Check Survey
o The survey should be used to encourage students in thinking about how they
contribute to the waste in the world around them

o As students have been introduced to what waste is, explain the Waste Check
and have the students complete the survey and evaluate how they deal with
waste.

o Once the Waste Check survey is complete, explain that the students can review
this at the end of the unit and see if they have applied what we have been
learning in class to how they deal with waste daily
o Introduce Adas violin

o Story about students from Paraguay who made their instruments from items
(Activity #2)
found in the landfill
o Read Adas Violin to the class
o After the reading, they will watch the video
o As this is a true story, the video has children from the orchestra talking about
their experience
o The students also get to hear the students play their instruments

o Talk about the aspects of waste that we discussed today and how they were
presented in the book also
