Caladan

III Delta Pavonis

By 10,191 A.G., the present day, the Atreides have

lived in Castle Caladan for twenty-six generations. Ruled
by 48 Atreides Siridar-Dukes of Caladan from Paulos XVI to
Duke Leto.
Paulos, the first Siridar Duke is said to have occupied
Castle Caladan in 8722 A.G. The ducal list of forty-eight
would seem to contradict the canonical twenty-six
generations. If one carefully avoids incorrectly counting
brothers, cousins, and nephews as being in differing
generations from their siblings and cousins, we find the
twenty-six-generation condition satisfied. The twenty-six
generations cover 1469 years or about 57 years per
generation. Life expectancy, thanks to the spice melange,
is greatly extended for nobles. For instance the Old Duke,
Letos father, died (violently, not of old age) in the Corrida
Escuda aged 105. Pyons have seen no change in their life
expectancy.
Caladan was probably be settled by the seventh
millennium A.G. Harmonthep, in the same system, received
its Zensunni contingent in 6049 A.G. Though Harmonthep
itself was destroyed by an unknown cause in the 6800s
A.G.

The Noble Houses of Caladan

House Atreides
Held in high esteem since the earliest days of the
new Imperium, House Atreides has produced a long line of
honourable scions. Universally beloved by its subjects, the
House has ruled its ancestral siridar-fief, the Duchy of
Caladan, for some 26 generations. Not known for being
one of the wealthier Houses, House Atreides has long been
esteemed for its fair conduct, and has held the respect of
its Landsraad peers since the Battle of Corrin long ago.
Recognised for their unflagging sense of justice,
other members of the Landsraad often turn to the Atreides
for leadership in times of crisis. The House is currently
beginning to feel the burden such leadership brings.
Widely admired among the more placid Houses for taking
a firm stand during the Ixian sanction and the Winter War
(as the Atreides call the end of the Ginaz-Moritani War of
Assassins), the political repercussions among the more
powerful Houses remain uncertain. While open action on
the part of its enemies remains doubtful, covert movement
and intrigue are another matter. As Menelaus Atreides
himself once said during an early Council session: "Calling
the Landsraad an 'august body'-now that's duplicity."
On Caladan, the directly administered fief, not
parcelled out to their Houses Minor, is the north of the
Western Continent. This is the most populated continent
of Caladan and location of Cala City, recognised capital.
Looming over the city Castle Caladan the true seat of
power. The Atreides also maintained elaborate bull
breeding facilities north of Cala City, but these had fallen
out of favour with the most recent Duke.
The Atreides claim exclusive dominance of the seas
and directly control all non-littoral island chains;
Serenas Necklace hosts the modern Ixian factories
for fish processing and the new docks High Seas
vessel,wingboats, and thopter manufacture
Elecran Islands are given entirely over to the Atreides
High Seas Fleet. This is also the native habitat of the
eponymous elecran electric eel. Caledonian whales and
other underwater interlopers do not venture. Normally
cala-whales will attack anything at sea and can grow to
leviathan proportions, they are the true rulers of this near
total water world.
With so much of the planet's surface covered by
water, marine industries serve as the cornerstone of
Caladan's meagre economy. Chief of its exports, the long-
grained pundi rice grows in the cultured rice paddies
found throughout the low, coastal wetlands of all three
continental landmasses. Also widely cultivated, the round,
gourd-like paradan cantaloupes float in tangled beds of
leather-leafed kelp, supported by rafts built to facilitate
growth and harvesting. In addition to these, wicker-wood
fishing coracles ply Caladan's vast oceans, carrying
fishermen far and wide in their trade. Perhaps more exotic,
though less viable for export, the beautiful precious coral
market supplements numerous industries based on the
mining of coral from Caladan's many natural and
commercial reefs.

House Minor Ravenser
A spear cadet branch of the Atreides. Their sub fief in
the Western continent is defined in the north by the
Agamennos Canyon, encompassing Lake Argent, then
south to Horizon and its surrounding pundi rice fields, and
the littoral zone.
Always fiercely independent, even as they live on the
same continent as the Atreides. The Ravenser have
different naming traditions (heavy French inspiration
rather than classical Greek) and reject Salic or agnatic
primogeniture and instead following matrilineal
primogeniture. Mater semper certa est!
Like the Atreides they have a fiercely honourable tradition
of service to those who have been unjustly wronged. They
consider themselves more pragmatic though recognising
realpolitik. The present Count of Aumalle is almost as
universally loved as Duke Leto Atreides. He has grown the
retinue of the House in anticipation of ascension to Great
House status.

House Minor Konstantinos
A distaff cadet branch of the Atreides.Their subfief
encompasses the Southern continent of the near-water
world Caladan. It is located just 200 miles south of the
sparsely populated Eastern Continent, and is the second
most populated land mass on the planet.
In recent centuries, just before the ascent of Duke
Mintaurous Atreides, House Atreides built larger spaceport
on the Southern Continent, called Atreides Landing, at
Luzhara. The direct exposure to the Imperial commerce
has immensely enriched the Konstantinos, but some worry
it has diluted their Atreides zeal for fair play.
The Southern continent also produces Caladanian
wines, grown in extensive vineyards covering the lush
fields of that area. In the hotter zones of the region, cidrit
farms existed to provide the Imperium with the fantastic
acidic, citrus fruit. As in most offshore regions of the
planet, paradan cantaloupes are grown and shipped off-
world.
Only the eldest in their family are announced in the
Sysselraad, the Konstantinos educate their youngest heirs
amongst the folk of the Southern Continent.
Commercial activity; Wine (Red Casyrack, Light Red
Bornolla and the native vines White Delkai), Cidrit,

House Mackensen
An indigineous House Minor, pre-dating the arrival of
the Atreides. There has been some intermarriage with the
Atreides houses. Their subfief is the Eastern Continent.
The least populated of the three land masses of the world,
and less developed than other Continents. It has virtually
no major cities of populace (i.e. >1 million). On the coasts
Mackensen fish and hunt the cala-whale using traditional
methods. They use unique weapons such as the
whalepick and have religious beliefs at odds with the
greater Imperium.
The eastern continent is also home to the Abbey of the
Sisters of Isolation, a group of women who have turned
their back on the Imperium. There they are dedicated to
meditation, sustaining their abbey through tapestry prized
and sold throughout the Imperium.
Commercial Activity Pundi Rice and Suugee rice spirit,
Eel, Kelp, Tapestry and Whale Fur
Religion Zensunni - followers of a schismatic sect that
broke away from the teachings of Maometh (the so-called
"Third Muhammed") about 1381 B.G. The Zensunni religion
is noted chiefly for its emphasis on the mystical and a
reversion to "the ways of the fathers." Most scholars name
Ali Ben Ohashi as leader of the original schism but there is
some evidence that Ohashi may have been merely the
male spokesman for his second wife, Nisai.

Other Locales of Note (refer to Ravenser Map)
Cala City is the greatest city of Caladan. A mighty seaport
servicing the spaceport of Old Choros. The City is also
home to the Great Hall of the Sysselraad in the Merchant
Quarter. In the Holy Quarter at the foot of Mt Syubi the
impressive, modern Corrida Tantalos, where the Old Duke
died at Salusan Horns in 10,163 A.G. There also the All
Saints College and the Basilica St Aigisthos (which is a
frithstead sanctuary for dissidents from other Great
Houses). To the north, some 10 kilometres distant, the
Atreides spacing fields (Old Choros) rest on the fused rock
flats of the north- eastern peninsula (with the Salusan Bull
training facilities lying another some 200 kilometres
northward).

Caladan Keep An ancient structure of forbidding stone.

Characterised by labyrinthine rooms and halls, with
vaulted ceilings, haunted by glowglobes illuminating
patterned wooden beams. It stands majestically, above
Cala estuary, atop Mount Syubi.

Lake Argent in Galach, or Castillo DArgent is the summer

home of the Ravenser, with extensive thorse breeding in
the open plains. The thorse, or Sleipnir horse, is a 6 or
even 8 legged horse. There is also a small bullfighting
arena.

Horizon is the main urban centre of House Ravenser. This

port focuses the export of pundi rice, kelp and precious
coral to Cala City, where the local spaceport deals with
external trade.

Underwater Park Nature Reserve and Zoological Facility.

There is an Imperial Planetological Research Station here,
headed by Imperial Civil Servant Udens Mainard. This is
considered Imperially sovereign and therefore an
inviolable locale. There are many other smaller unmarked
research stations.

The Sisters in Isolation On Caladan's isolated Eastern

Continent, the Abbey provides shelter, where Sisters can
retreat from the World, and Imperium. To sustain their
Abbey they weave tapestries for sale throughout the
Imperium. Many of the sisters take a vow of silence, and
all who enter the compound pledge never return to the
outside world.
