Role Purpose

Organise and utilise an effective School Support Technician Team in a secondary school by co-ordinating the science
and technical technician activity.

Organise and utilise an effective School Support Technician Team by co-ordinating technicians to ensure relevant
health and safety legislation is adhered to, that operating procedures, inspections and tests are carried out and
recorded where relevant to meet legislative and best practice procedures and that personal protective equipment is
used within the technician service in the school.

Provide an effective School Support Technician Team by supporting curricular subject areas of science or technical
education enabling employees and pupils to utilise the resources in an effective manner in secondary schools and
special schools/units in accordance with health and safety legislation.

Support the School and Corporate Objectives by promoting a performance driven culture of team work and flexibility,
contributing to the overall success of the Council.

Support and encourage the continuous improvement of the Education and School Services Delivery and
Performance.

Role Accountabilities & Key Activities

Operational Delivery
Organise and utilise an effective School Technician Team to service classes, departments, secondary schools, and
special schools/units within science and technical education by ensuring that equipment, materials and chemicals
required are properly stored, prepared and available in a safe and functional condition.

Organise and utilise an effective School Technician Team to service other departments, primary pupils within the
school and other secondary schools or special schools/units within the science or technical education discipline in line
with customer requirements as requested by the Head Teacher.

Organise and co-ordinate purchasing within tools and equipment budget for technicians.

Operate ICT equipment and utilise software systems as required in line with class or departmental requirements
within science or technical education.

Assist teaching staff in science and technical departments with chemical and equipment inventory control, provide
requisition advice when required and undertake an annual inventory of chemical stock.

Within a given discipline provide and set up technical aids and equipment in the classroom and demonstrate safe and
effective use of equipment and chemicals to teaching staff as required.

Ensure that equipment and apparatus is maintained and repaired, that repairs are carried out internally or by utilising
recognised external providers as required, and that Best Value is adhered to.

Liaise with Teaching Staff, the Head Teacher and School Support Manager on a regular basis to ascertain technician
support requirements and ensure that service level agreements are being met.

Health and Safety

Ensure that chemicals and hazardous substances are stored and used, and hazardous waste is disposed of by
technicians safely and in accordance with COSHH, other relevant legislation and East Dunbartonshire Council policy
and where relevant carry out Level III work with micro-organisms as outlined in the COSHH regulations and East
Dunbartonshire Council policy.

Take responsibility for the co-ordination and recording of chemical and hazardous waste disposal requirements for
the school under SEPA regulations.

Ensure that personal protective equipment is readily available, in good condition, properly stored, used and disposed
of by technicians.

Co-ordinate all visual inspections and tests of equipment as specified by East Dunbartonshire Council policy and
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) guidelines in all school departments with the exception of ICT and multimedia
equipment and ensure that an appropriate system of recording inspections and tests undertaken is maintained and an
accurate record of action taken or recommended is kept.

Co-ordinate health and safety inspections, tests and maintenance of equipment and resources by the technician team
in the school at the required frequency to conform to COSHH and PUWER and other regulations and East
Dunbartonshire Council policy and ensure the results are recorded.

Ensure that cyclical safety checks of equipment and machinery, including emergency stop systems, are undertaken
and where relevant undertake routine maintenance of design and technology workrooms in accordance with COSHH,
PUWER and East Dunbartonshire Council policy.

Adhere to health and safety legislation and risk assessments and monitor operating procedures to ensure best
practice and personal protective equipment is used when appropriate.

Test equipment and resources at the required frequency and record results to conform to health and safety
regulations including COSHH, PUWER and East Dunbartonshire Council policy.

Undertake visual inspections and tests of equipment at a frequency specified by health and safety regulations and
East Dunbartonshire Council policy on Portable Appliance Testing within the school with the exception of ICT and
multimedia and accurately record inspections and tests carried out and action taken or recommended.

Liaise with the School Support Manager as necessary to ensure that health and safety legislation, guidance and
policy are being adhered to by the technician team.

Relationship Management
Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with all stakeholders by developing a mutual understanding of
needs whilst ensuring performance against agreed standards and objectives.

Team Leadership & Development


Ensure high performance is obtained from the Technician Team through a focused approach to enhancing service
delivery.
Assist in the management of resources to ensure maximum flexibility and productivity through contribution to the
identification and rectification of productivity issues and other problem areas within the team.
Support a learning culture within the team, encouraging interdependent learning and feedback.
Implementation of Performance & Development Review (PDR) process within the team for employees ensuring
regular monitoring and review of performance within the corporate framework is applied.

Customer Service Delivery


Contribute to the achievement and attainment of performance standards, monitoring on an ongoing basis to identify
effective improvements that focus on maximising customer satisfaction and benefit internal ways of working.
Contribute to continuous improvement of Technician Team ensuring that changes are fully implemented and
effectively communicated to all stakeholders.
Support a customer focused culture in service delivery and improvement to enhance the performance of the
organisation.

Key Relationships

The role has direct team leadership accountability for science and technical technicians. The role will work flexibly
with other Team Leaders to share best practice and where appropriate, share resources to achieve service level
priorities.

The role is required to effectively manage resource to demand and balance short-term priorities within planned
activities and delivery commitments. On a day-to-day basis, the job holder will be required to use initiative to progress
day-to-day activities. More complex issues will be referred to the School Support Manager.

The role interacts with teachers, technicians, senior technicians, the Technician Service Adviser and the School
Support Manager
