Problem 1

A company fabricates 100- resistors. Tow production lines used to manufacture the
resistors are selected with probabilities 0.45 (line 1) and 0.55 (line 2). Each line
can exceed the nominal value by no more than 2 . Given that line is observed,
the probabilities are 0.03, 0.05, 0.89, 0.02, and 0.01 that the resistances will be
98, 99, 100, 101, and 102 , respectively. For line 2, the similar respective
probabilities are 0.02, 0.07, 0.84, 0.04, and 0.03.
A] What is the probability that a resistor will have a value of 98 ? Repeat for the other
values.
B] Given that a resistor has 100- resistance, what is the probability it came form line 1?

Problem 2

Let X be a Rayleigh random variable with a = 0, and b = 4. Since the mode of fX(x) is the
value x for which the density reaches its maximum, which occurs at x = a + (b/2)1/2. Find
the probability that X will have values larger than its mode.

Problem 3
The output of a square law device is given by y = 3(x-3) 2 - 3. Given that X is a random
variable with density fX(x)
A] Determine the density of Y fY(y) in terms of fX
B] If X is an N(0,1) random variable, find the density fY(y)
