Electromagnetic Waves

1. Prove the following:

(a) |Z(l)| ∈ ( Zρ0 , Z0 ρ)

(b) Z(l + λ2 ) = Z(l)
Z(l)
(c) Z(l + λ4 ) = (Z(l))−1 , where Z(l) = Z0

2. On a lossless transmission line, the SWR was found to be 5 and Z0 = 50 Ω. In order

to identify the conditions on the line, the following measurements were made.

(a) First maxima occurred at a distance of .25 m from the load.

(b) Second maxima occurred at a distance of 0.75 m from the load.
(c) VL = 100 V.

Calculate ZL , V + , V − , I + and I − .

3. I want to set up my TV using my old rooftop antenna service. I know the char-
acteristic impedance of my TV is 75 Ω and antenna is 300 Ω. What should be
the characteristic impedance and length of the cable that I should use to connect
my TV and my antenna to ensure all the power from the antenna reached my TV.
Frequency of communication is given to be 50 MHz.

4. I have a load ZL = 50 + j80 Ω. I wish to match it with a transmission wire of

characteristic impedance of 50 Ω.Given wavelength of operation is 10 cm, what
should be the length of the stub if:

(a) A short circuit stub is used.

(b) An open circuit stub is used.

Which type of stub is generally preferred in real time application?

5. Consider (n + 1) lines, each of characteristic impedance Z0 , emanating from a

common junction, as shown in fig.1 (for n=2). For a wave carrying power P incident
on the junction from one of the lines, find the power reflected into that line and
power transmitted into each of the remaining n lines for n = 2,3,9.

ferred to the load. Source voltage is 100 V and length of the cable is 300 m. Assume
velocity of voltage waveform to be 2 × 108 ms .
