Sample Questions for Practice


1. Explain the characteristics/advantages/disadvantages/applications of microwave engineering.
2. List IEEE microwave bands with at least one application for each band. Given the dimensions
of a waveguide, how shall one determine whether it can be used in a particular microwave
band?
3. Design a double-stub tuner using Smith Chart to match a transmission line with characteristic
impedance of 100 ohms to a 100+j100 Ω load. The distance between the two short-circuited
shunt stubs is λ/8 while the first stub is located at the load. Determine two solutions for each of
the stub lengths.
4. Design a double stub matching network using short-circuited shunt stub to match the
terminating load ZL= 100+j100 to the characteristic impedance Z0= 50 Ω. The first stub
is placed at 0.40λ away from load and the spacing between two stubs is λ/8.
5. A TE11 mode of 10 GHz is being propagated in a rectangular waveguide. The magnetic field
intensity in the z-direction is given as

The phase constant is β=10.45 rad/cm. The quantities x and y and a and b in the above
expression are in cm. Determine cut-off frequency, phase velocity, guided wavelength and
magnetic field intensity in the y-direction.
6. A rectangular waveguide is designed to propagate the dominant mode at 5 GHz. The cut-off
frequency is 0.8 of the signal frequency. The ratio of the guide height to width is 2. The time
average power flow through the waveguide is 1kW. Determine the magnitudes of electric and
magnetic fields inside the guide and indicate where these occur in the guide.
7. A rectangular waveguide operating at 3.5 GHz in the dominant TE10 mode has inside
dimensions a=7 cm b=3.5 cm. Calculate cut-off frequency, phase velocity and guided
wavelength.
8. A lossless transmission line of length 0.3λ with characteristic impedance of 500Ω is
excited by 10V generator at 1200 MHz. Calculate the input impedance of the line for
(a) Open circuited load (b) Short-circuited load.
9. A lossless transmission line is terminated in a 100Ω load. If the VSWR on the line is
1.5, find the two possible values for the characteristic impedance on the line.
10. A RF transmission line has standing wave minima 140 cm apart and last voltage minima
at 35cm away from the load. If the VSWR is 2.2 and Zo = 250 Ω. Find the load
impedance.
11. A load of 100+j75Ω is connected to a 75 Ω lossless line. Find (a) Γ (b) s (c) Load
admittance (d) Zin at 0.4λ from the load, (e) locations of Vmax and Vmin with respect
to the load if the line is 0.6λ long, (f) Zin at the generator.
12. Design a microstrip line on a 0.6 mm alumina substrate (εr=9.9, tanδ=0.001) for a 50 Ω
characteristic impedance. Find the length of this line required to produce a phase delay
of 2700 at 5 GHz.
13. For the following lossless transmission line Calculate the a. Reflection Coefficient, b.
VSWR and c. The input impedance. (Use analytical method)

14. For a transmission line having S = 1.5, Zo = 50 ohms, find the phase constant. Also
find the load impedance if the distance of first and second maxima from the load are
4cm and 14 cm respectively.
