HFSS Tutorial 5: Radar Cross Section

(RCS) of a Rectangular Metal Sheet

Goal: Find the radar cross section of a rectangular metal sheet.

Lessons learned:
• Incident field setup.
• Far field scattering parameter.
RCS Definition:

Normalized RCS:

For a large rectangular metal sheet,

Let the size of the metal sheet be , plot the normalized RCS
from to .
1. Project->Insert HFSS Design
2. Save it as tutorial5
File->Save as
3. Set frequency to, say, 10 GHz. Compute the wavelength and
save it to a variable “wl”.
4. Create a variable “W=wl”.
5. Create the metal sheet and air box. Set all sides of air box to
“2*wl”.
6. Assign Perfect-E Boundary to the metal sheet.
7. Assign “Radiation” boundary to the air box.
8. Add incident wave excitation. Let the E-field be in x-direction
and the propagation direction in z-direction.
Excitation->Assign->Incident Wave->Plane Wave
9. Add solution setup at 10 GHz.
Analysis->Add Solution Setup
1
10. Add Parametric Sweep for .
Optimetrics->Add->Parametric
Perform the simulation.
11. Setup radiation.
Radiation->Insert Far Field Setup
Set “Step Size” to 1 degree. Set “Theta Stop” to 360.
12. Plot the result with the approximation formula.
Results->Create Far Fields Report->Rectangular Plot
Select “MonostaticRCS” and then
“NormMonostaticRCSTotal”.
