Late goals turn win into loss

In a matter of min-
utes Saturday night,
a Crew SC advantage
dropped into a loss it
will have plenty of time
to ponder during its
first two-week break of
the season.
A Colorado Rapids
team that entered the
game with just 10 goals
in 12 matches scored
twice — in the 80th and
86th minute — sending
the Crew to a 2-1 loss at
Dick’s Sporting Goods
Park in Commerce
City, Colorado.
It was hardly the
result the Crew would
have expected in the
61st minute, when
midfielder Federico
Higuain unleashed a
shot that pinballed off
the back of Colorado
defender Michael Azira
and found the net for a
1-0 lead.
But that advantage
evaporated in the
80th minute on a goal
by Kevin Doyle. Alan
Gordon headed in the
winner in the 86th,
sending the Crew (7-8-
1) to its third loss in
four games and a 2-6-0
record on the road.
The game ended as a
head-scratching loss
and began with a few
stretches that reflected
a Crew team playing its
third game in nine days,
and at elevation.
Crew SC goal-

didn’t have to make
a save in the first half
on Wednesday in a
3-0 win over Seattle.
Against the Rapids,
he made five, keeping
the Crew afloat as it
reached halftime in a

but struggled to create

close.
The Crew finished
the half with five shots
to the Rapids’ six, but
for the third straight
road half failed to
put a shot on target.
