immortality hung in midair as an
entire stadium, an entire city, an
entire country, held its breath.
It was first down, in one of the
ugliest Super Bowls in the game’s
storied past — four quarters foot-
ball history will hopefully forget
— and the Rams were driving to-
ward a deranged sort of destiny,
one that neither they nor the Pa-
triots seemed willing to seize on

Plane crashes into house, killing 5

A small plane tumbled out of the
sky and crashed into a Yorba Linda
neighborhood Sunday, engulfing a
home in fire and killing five peo-
ple. Some residents had observed
the twin-engine plane starting to
come apart and catch fire midair.
Orange County Sheriff’s Depart-
ment Lt. Cory Martino said the pi-
lot, who was alone in the plane,
died. Killed in the home were two
homeowners and two others — two
males and two females.
None of those killed were imme-
diately publicly identified. Orange County Fire Authority firefighters put out hot spots after a

ences largely took the weekend
off from the theaters in what
is estimated to be the lowest-
earning Super Bowl weekend
in nearly two decades.
M. Night Shyamalan’s “Glass”
kept a fragile hold on the No. 1
spot for the third time while
“The Upside” stayed in a close
second on this sleepy box office
weekend. Studios on Sunday es-
timate that “Glass” has earned
an additional $9.5 million in
ticket sales, bringing its total
earnings to $88.7 million.
STX’s “The Upside” added
$8.9 million. The Kevin Hart
and Bryan Cranston film has
held very well in its four weeks
in theaters, never dropping
more than 30 percent week to
week. Its domestic grosses are
already up to $75.6 million.
The weekend’s only big new-
comer, “Miss Bala,” landed in
third place with $6.7 million.
Gina Rodriguez stars in the
Catherine Hardwicke-directed
action movie, which is a remake

the lower end of projections for
the Sony film, “Miss Bala” was
also made for a modest $15 mil-

Eastern states suffered

peratures incurred by the
wrath of the polar vortex. So
those lucky enough to live in or
visit Southern California right
now can weather a few rain-
drops, for-gosh-sake.
That was the attitude of the
14,000 people who showed
up early Sunday morning to
power through the 23rd an-
nual Surf City Marathon and
Half Marathon — come rain or
the threat of rain.

Orange resident Helen
Nguyen, mother to four
girls, has been waiting for
nearly seven months for
the Vietnamese govern-
ment to release her hus-
band, an American citizen
detained while visiting his
birthplace.
On Tuesday, she will
be the guest of Rep. Katie
Porter, D-Irvine, at Presi-
dent Donald Trump’s State
of the Union address in
Washington, D.C., where
she and the congress-
woman hope her appear-
ance will bring more at-
tention to her husband’s
plight.
“America, as a country,
is sending a signal to Viet-
nam,” Porter said Satur-
day. “We expect that when
our citizens are abroad,
they will be treated con-
sistent with human rights
and democratic values.
Helen Nguyen said she’s
grateful and honored for
the opportunity.
Michael Nguyen, 55,
also known as Michael
Phuong Minh Nguyen, was
detained last July.
He was accused of con-
spiring against the gov-
ernment, but no official
charges have been brought
against him.
His family said he was
visiting family and friends
and touring the country
and was not involved in
any antigovernment ac-
tivity.
Since then, more than
20 former and current
members of Congress have
signed letters urging his
return, said Mark Roberts,
Nguyen’s brother-in-law.
Roberts, an Orange
County resident, also will
be attending Trump’s
speech as the guest of
Rep. Alexander Green, D-
Houston. (Michael Nguyen
used to live in Texas and
still has family there, Rob-
erts said.)
The ordeal has been dif-
ficult for the family, they
said.

That’s something her
husband was mostly in
charge of, she said.
The family is not al-
lowed to visit him in Viet-
nam, where he can have
only one visit a month by
U.S. Consulate representa-
tives. They take him care
packages from the family
with items like beef jerky,
vegetable crackers and
chocolate.
“Our messages are de-
livered to him through
the U.S. Consulate, trans-
lated in Vietnamese. And
they read it to Michael in
front of the guards there,”
Helen Nguyen said.
Porter praised Helen
Nguyen’s strength.
“She is an amazing
woman caring for her el-
derly parents, raising four
children, taking care of pa-
tients every day, and she’s
without the love and sup-
port of her husband; and
there’s no information
about why he’s detained
and when he will be re-
leased,” Porter said.
The choice of who to

State of the Union speech
is often used to send a
political message. Rep.
Jimmy Gomez, D-Los An-
geles, for example, invited
a housekeeper who used
to work for Trump while
she was undocumented,
before she became a legal
resident.
Porter said that her in-
vitation of Nguyen tran-
scends party lines, noting
that her predecessor, Re-
publican Mimi Walters,
was involved in leading the
fight for his return.
“Helen’s situation and
what’s happening to Mi-
chael Nguyen is not a par-
tisan issue,” Porter said.
“This is about bringing
home one of our own.”

“This undertaking is
a response to the call of
our patients, families and
supporters to bring City
of Hope’s innovative dis-
coveries and specialized
therapies closer to their
homes,” she said. “Any
time you don’t have to
drive 88 miles to get to
the hospital, how much
better is that?”

from Orange County has
been steadily increasing
over the years as well,
Walker said. The New-
port Beach facility will
house medical services
such as breast and other
medical oncolog y and
convenient access to sub-
specialists, she said.

Treatment
City of Hope is desig-
nated by the National
Cancer Institute as one of
49 comprehensive cancer
centers in the country.
Kennedy said the local
cancer treatment cen-
ters will be a blessing for
someone like him who is
potentially going to need
lifelong treatment since
there is currently no cure
for multiple myeloma.
But, he says, the im-
mu not herapy treat-
ments, which he now
gets monthly, are “mak-
ing it better.” Each infu-
sion session lasts five to
six hours, Kennedy said.
“It’s not just the conve-
nience factor, but I’ll also
have more direct access
to leading experts,” he
said. “I need this because
I’m going to be fighting
this forever.”
Kennedy said he knows
he’s getting the best treat-
ment possible because his
doctor is an international
leader in the treatment of
myeloma.
“She’s doing research
and she thinks about
it all day, everyday,” he
said. “You need that fo-
cus, that specialty in
the development of your
treatment plan.”

This is going to be the
sweetest event in the city.
Created to coincide with
Valentine’s Day, the 15th an-
nual Belmont Shore Choco-
late Festival turns the Long
Beach neighborhood into a
chocolate lover’s paradise
with more than two dozen
restaurants serving sweet
treats varying from cup-
cakes and ice cream floats
to cookies and churros.
The festival begins at
noon Saturday with a home-
made chocolate dessert con-
test where a panel of lucky
judges will get to sample
chocolate cakes, pies, cook-
ies and brownies to deter-
mine who is the best local
baker.
Sadly, only judges are
able to taste the entries, but
don’t panic because from 1-3
p.m. is when the main event
takes place, as people pick

Belmont Shore, Dena Jones
was a regular at Tavern on
2, where she would hang
out with her friends, drink-
ing mimosas on the patio.
But the rest aura nt
abruptly closed last year,
and the once-lively patio
now sits empty behind a
loose wood fence.
Yet Jones couldn’t be
more excited about the fu-
ture of the Belmont Shore
spot, because now it’s hers.
“I have always had the
goal of owning a restau-
rant down here. I never
thought it would ever be

Is California closer to closing private prisons?

California Democrats
think 2019 is their best
chance yet to accomplish a
long-held liberal goal: shut-
tering the state’s private
prisons.
Gov. Gavin Newsom
vowed in his inaugural ad-
dress “to end the outrage
that is private prisons,” and
now state lawmakers are
mounting a renewed effort
to turn that applause line
into reality. They’re paint-
ing the move as an act of re-
sistance against one of the
Trump administration’s
most important corporate
partners.
But with California’s cor-
rections system still far over
capacity, some state lead-
ers are questioning how far
they can go in casting aside
the private prison industry.
The state’s use of private
prisons jumped after a fed-
eral court ordered officials
to reduce perilous over-
crowding in 2009, when in-
mates were crammed into
gymnasium bunk beds and
the suicide rate was nearly
double the national average.
The prison population
has dropped precipitously
since then, but California
currently has more than
4,000 inmates in private fa-
cilities, about half in-state
and half in Arizona, costing
the state millions each year.
The two companies hold-
ing California inmates —
CoreCivic and GEO Group,
the largest firms in the in-
dustry — both have faced
numerous lawsuits over the
years accusing them of poor
medical care and treatment
of inmates.
Democrats are pushing

would block California

“It’s inconsistent with our
values to be putting inmates
in prisons where the incen-
tive is to minimize invest-
ments and maximize prof-
its for shareholders,” said
Assemblyman Rob Bonta,
D-Oakland, one of the bill’s
authors.
Newsom’s office declined
to comment on the bill. The
state corrections depart-
ment noted that it has re-
duced its reliance on pri-
vate prisons — including
ending the use of several
other out-of-state facili-
ties — and plans to pull in-
mates out of the last Ari-
zona prison this year.
If Newsom backs the ef-
fort, it would show a differ-
ent approach from that of
his predecessor. Gov. Jerry
Brown vetoed a more lim-
ited bill in 2017 that would
have ended the state’s use
of out-of-state private pris-
ons, arguing that the cor-
rections department “needs
to maintain maximum flex-
ibility in the short term” be-
cause of the court mandate.
As of last week, Califor-
nia’s public prisons held
117,195 inmates — 130.6
percent of the capacity they
were designed to house.
Under the court order,
the state cannot exceed
137.5 percent of capacity,
and adding in the 4,004 in-
mates currently held in pri-
vate prisons would raise the
level to 134.8 percent.
Private prison supporters
argue that would be worry-
ingly close to the court-or-
dered cap.
“Not everyone wants to
hear this, but (the private
prisons) did a really good
job of providing us with
the capacity we needed,”
said Scott Kernan, the for-
mer state corrections de-
partment chief who retired
last year and is a member
of GEO Group’s board of di-
rectors.
Kernan described the fa-
cilities as “a necessary and
integral part of how we
managed our population”
over the past decade.
But he noted that the fa-
cilities had become less im-
portant as the state’s prison
population has declined —
down from a peak of more
than 173,000 inmates in

agriculture historically is a
man’s field.
But for centuries, women
have been key yet invisi-
ble contributors to Ameri-
can agriculture. In ancient
farming societies, women
did a lot of the heavy lifting,
including hoeing, digging
and hauling in the crops.
According to the 2014
Census of Agriculture by
the USDA, women repre-
sent 30 percent of farmers
in the United States. In Ari-
zona, that number is 45 per-
cent.
In 2012, women who were
the principal operators of
their farm sold $12.9 billion
in agricultural products and
operated 62.7 million acres
of farmland. However, of the
2.1 million principal farm
operators nationally, only
13.7 percent were women.
That was only a 3 percent
increase since 1978.
For Markegard, the grass
ceiling can start to break by
getting young girls dirty as
early as possible. She al-
ways makes sure to involve
her daughters in the farm-
ing business, be it throwing
hay, mucking stalls or build-
ing fences.
“My daughter came home
from school one day and
said, ‘Mom, I’m the only
third-grader who knows
how to build a fence!’ ”
Markegard said with a
smile.
But not all girls have the
opportunity to learn farm-
ing at such a young age.
Christine Hantelman,
who co-owns Wookey Ranch
in Chico with her husband,
Richard Coon, moved from
Iowa to California with no
intention of being a farmer.
Even though she grew up
around tons of farms, Han-
telman had never learned
much past shucking corn.
Nonetheless, she was in-
spired by the idea of liv-
ing off the land and provid-
ing food for her family and
friends.
After quitting their day

jobs, Hantelman and Coon
turned their focus on cre-
ating their own ranch and
butchery. Now, they have
400 acres of land with
sheep, chickens, turkeys
and pigs.
“I do all the killing, scald-
ing and plucking of the
chickens,” Hantelman said.
“My husband then inspects
the organs and puts them in
the chiller.”
She also learned how to
shear sheep to make wool,
which is then used as mulch
around the fruit trees or
sold to the local co-op. The
sheep also play a crucial role
in keeping the long grass
down to lessen the chance
of wildfires.
Hantelman noted that
ranching is a huge chal-
lenge but a good one. “If
we are gonna eat meat, we
need to participate in the
entire process,” she said.
This practice also inspired
her to get a master’s in bot-
any from Chico State Uni-
versity to better understand
the indigenous wild grasses
and wildflowers on her land.
Hantelman hopes that
more women will become
inspired to operate their
own farm. When asked
why women are necessary
in the regenerative agricul-
ture movement, she said,
“We’re half the population,
so we should have at least
half of the input.”
This sentiment may ex-
pand beyond California.
“It’s pretty lonely out
there,” said Montana
rancher Hilary Zaranek-An-
derson. “There are a lot of
men in black cowboy hats
and a lot of conventional
farming operations.”
Like Hantelman,
Zaranek-Anderson believes
that giving back as much
as you take from the land is
key in breaking free of con-
ventional farming practices
— which the soil and the
planet can no longer sup-
port, she said.

of a federal jail on the Brook-
lyn waterfront, the sound re-
verberates: a polyrhythmic
pounding like a hailstorm
on the roof of a shed.
It is the sound of hundreds
of men in freezing cells at the
Metropolitan Detention Cen-
ter in Sunset Park, a jail that
was virtually without elec-
tricity and largely without
heat for more than a week.
With the jail on partial lock-
down, inmates have been
unable to use phones to call
loved ones, but their percus-
sive banging could be clearly
heard to those outside, and
to the world beyond.
The inmates bang any-
thing they can — shoes, their
fists — against any surface
they meet: the walls and
windows and bars of the jail
that holds them.
On Sunday morning,
when protesters unfurled
a long paper banner across
the street from the jail that
said, “You are heard you are
loved,” the inmates banged
their approval.
When Catana Yehudah,
whose brother Jason Smith
is serving a gun possession
sentence at the jail, led a
chant through a megaphone
— “No heat, that’s torture” —
the inmates banged louder.
Yehudah, 50, called for
quiet. “Stop banging for one
second!” she yelled. The bar-
rage subsided.
“If there is no heat,” she
shouted, “bang on the win-
dows!”
The inmates, nearly in-
visible behind the windows,
pounded louder and louder,
the fusillade filling the wide
empty street.
Around 6:30 p.m., electric-
ity was restored. But prob-
lems with the heating sys-
tem, which are unrelated to
the electrical failure, remain,

jail had been kept on lock-

tricity since an electrical fire

side. Rita, a long-term resident of Orange County, retired from

games without him. We
wouldn’t have done all the
great things we’ve done on

employees in December

those figures are correct,
it’s the first year-over-year
job cuts since July 2010.
This dip would mark
the end of the post-Great
Recession hiring spree.
So let’s first tip the cap to
the remarkable 100-month
streak of year-over-year
job growth. It added
287,500 jobs, or roughly 1
in 6 of current manpower,
and helped pushed the lo-
cal unemployment rate to
2.8 percent from 10.1 per-
cent.
The dissection
This reported job drop
runs counter to many eco-
nomic yardsticks showing
a cooling but still-grow-
ing business climate. The
most plausible reason for
any hiring softness would
be a worker shortage so se-
vere bosses had nobody
to replace departing em-
ployees.
I know we like our eco-
nomic analysis instanta-
neous but the answer to
this employment math rid-
dle must wait until the an-
nual revisions to local jobs
data that come in early
March. That “rebench-
marking” in recent years
has shown the state’s ini-
tial job counts are often
low.
The economists who
track the local jobs market
think when last year’s hir-
ing tally is revised, it will
show 2018 jobs growth ex-
ceeding 20,000 positions.
But for a moment, as-
sume the state’s dip is cor-

In less than six years, an
Irvine-based concept that
put package lockers into
apartment complexes has
been conceived and sold for
$100 million.
Parcel Pending was cre-
ated in 2013 to solve a prob-
lem.
At the time, its founder
Lori Torres was working
for Irvine Co., one of the
country’s largest apartment
landlords. As senior vice
president of property man-
agement, she was barraged
with requests for more em-
ployees to help sort mounds
of packages delivered daily.
“In these communities,
leasing offices went from
handling one package a day
to 75 to 100 packages,” said
Torres in a 2016 interview
with The Orange County
Register. “It was out of con-
trol. We did a time-and-mo-
tion study and found that
for every 15 packages, it
takes one hour of staff time
to manage those packages.
That hour of time used to
be used to lease apartments
and to really take care of
the residents.”
Torres left Irvine Co. and
created a parcel manage-
ment company, putting re-
inforced lockers with key-
pad access into apartment
complexes across the U.S.
Clients include Irvine Co.,
UDR, Greystar and Alliance
Residential in 48 states and
Canada.
One of the driving suc-
cesses to the system: It’s
not proprietary, meaning
any delivery company can
access the lockers (not just
Amazon).
When a package is de-
locker, the recipient gets a
text and/or email with an
access code, and he or she
picks up the package by en-
tering a code into the lock-
er’s touchscreen system.
Parcel Pending an-
nounced Thursday that it
had been acquired by Paris-
based Neopost, another
mail solutions company,
for more than $100 million.
The companies declined to
be more specific about how
much more.
Business at Parcel Pend-
ing remain “as usual,” a
representative said Friday.
Torres will remain CEO of
the company, which will
continue to operate from Ir-
vine.
The company has about
150 employees.
“For Neopost, the acqui-
sition of Parcel Pending is
a major step forward in en-
tering the very promis-
ing American parcel locker
market,” said its CEO, Geof-
frey Godet, in a statement.
As for Neopost, the com-
pany also offers electronic
lockers like Parcel Pending,
which are mostly in Japan
and France. The company
is looking to expand the
electronic locker system in
the U.S. Neopost also offers
postage meters and hard-
ware and software mailing
systems, and letter and doc-
ument folding machines.

line of lockers built for the
single-family home.
