The test shall begin with the arrangement of the set up as shown in Appendix D.

Set- Up Arrangements

A bearing 800mm x 800mm x 200mm cap (ICE Document Section B.15.9 Reaction system) shall be
constructed on the selected pile to be tested for the jack to be placed on level plane and also to
house the dowel bars which shall be cranked to remain within it. (The bar shall later be straightened
after the test and the support broken. Please note that it is only when the support has cured or cube
strength ascertained to be equal or greater than 25N/mm2 strength that the test can be carried out).

Blocks/wood support crib for the test beam shall be placed a distance of between 2.5m to 3.0m
center to center from test pile.

The 4 Nos load block frame is them placed 2m apart on which the load blocks are arranged in
layers adequate as 110% Test Load as shown in Attachment 1.

Next is the jack with its accessories including the load cell are placed centered on the test pile and test
beam. There shall be minimum 10mm thick bearing plate between the jack and the test pile support
and also between the load cell top and bottom of test beam

According to Section 7.2.2 of ASTM a minimum of two displacement indicators shall be placed on the
reference beams to bear on the pile top at axisymmetric points equidistant from the center of the test
pile, or pile cap, with stems parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pile.

The two parallel reference beams shall be oriented, one on each side of the pile to be tested, in a
direction that permits placing their supports as far as feasible from the other supports.

Also survey level instrument shall be used to check if Kentledge system displaces vertically.

Loading Procedure

Maximum Allowable Test load for working piles test load shall be 150% Allowable pile load.

Loading

Working pile, According to ASTM D 1143 load procedure C section 8.1.3), unless failure occurs
first, shall be loaded to a maximum of 150 % of the anticipated design load, applying the load in
increments of 25 % of the design load. Each load increment shall be maintained until the rate of axial
movement does not exceed 0.25 mm (0.01 in) per hour, with a minimum time adequate to verify this
movement rate based on the accuracy of the movement indicator readings, and with a maximum of 2
hr. After applying the maximum load and reaching an overall test duration of at least 12 hr. Unloading
shall begin when the axial movement measured over a period of 1 hr does not exceed 0.25 mm (0.01
in); otherwise the maximum load shall be allowed to remain on the pile or pile group for 24 hrs.

For trial/test pile, up to 200% of allowable loads shall be applied in incremental of 25% and the pile
movement observed with the installed gauges until the rate of axial movement does not exceed
0.25 mm or per hour. However, if pile movement exceed this limit, the observation of its movement
shall be undertaken for every loading for a maximum of 2 hours.

Unloading

After applying the maximum load and reaching an overall test duration of at least 12 hr or when the
axial movement measured over a period of 1 hr does not exceed 0.25 mm (0.01 in) unloading shall begin
; otherwise the maximum test load shall be allowed to remain for a minimum period of
24 hours. The unloading shall also be done in decrements of 25 % of the maximum test load with 1 hr
between decrements.

Reloading (Only for Trial/Test Piles)

After the load has been applied and removed in accordance with ASTM 8.1.3 and as described above,
the trial pile shall be reloaded to 200% maintained load in increments of 50 % of the pile or pile group
design load, allowing 20 minutes between load increments. Then the additional load that will take
the loading to 250% allowable load shall be applied in increments of 10 % of the design load for the
pile or pile group until reaching the maximum required load (250%) or failure, allowing 20 min
between load increments.

If failure occurs continue jacking the pile until the settlement equals 10 % of the pile diameter or
width. If failure does not occur, hold the full load for 2 hr and then remove the load in four equal
decrements, allowing 20 min between decrements.
See below, the loading cycle table for the trial and working piles foe each of the pile types

Failure

SSG-NG01012401_869393-F07-00047 METHOD STATEMENT FOR OGBOTOBO CFA PILE INSTALLATION & TESTING
Failure load/ maximum load possible during loading/reloading is defined as the load that makes total
axial movement of pile equals 10 % the pile diameter or width. This load then becomes the Ultimate
Capacity of the Pile.

See below, the loading cycle table each for the working piles and trial/test pile.

4.1.3 Machinery and Equipment

There are the minimum equipment shall be needed to complete the Static Loading Test

Kentledge System

Concrete block of weight (1.5 to 3 tons), used as test load, with at least 10 % greater than the
maximum anticipated test load.
Hydraulic Jacks

Single acting Hydraulic Jacks with Hydraulic Pump and Pressure measurement tools all calibrated.

Bearing Plates/Stiffeners

Steel bearing plates are needed to spread the load from the outer perimeter of the jack(s), or the
bearing surface of beams or boxes, to bear on the surface of the test pile or pile cap, also to
spread the load between the jack(s), load cells, and hemispherical bearings, and to spread the load to
the test beam(s), test pile, or pile cap. Bearing plates shall extend the full flange width of steel beams
and the complete top area of piles, or as specified by the Engineer, so as to provide full bearing and
distribution of the load.

Dial gauges

Minimum two dial gauges shall be provided to monitor the pile’s head movements by mounting
between the pile head and reference beams. The micrometer has a range of 0‐35 or 0-50 mm and an
accuracy of 0.01 mm.

Reference Beam
Two reference beams (Steel channel or angle) will be cross‐connected and laid on support, firmly
embedded in ground.

Structural Steel Sections/Column/Beam

The beams shall act as load bearing and also the support the load blocks.

Other Equipment

Medium Duty Crane, Tow Trailers, Grinding Machine with Steel and Concrete grinders, Drilling
Machine and Tools, Welding Machine, chisel, hammer, hydraulic oil etc.

Result Presentation

The test results will then be reported in the form of

 Load vs. settlement curve And capacity comparison with Davidson failure load criteria and pile
elastic property.
 Report and recommendations on the ultimate pile capacity.
 Certification of calibration (Dial Gauges and Pressure measure)

4.2 Integrity Test

This involves testing all CFA, with the Pulse Echo Method described above to evaluate pile for
defects such as
 Inclusions in pile concrete (soil or any other material) especially for CFA piles
 Change in pile profile
 Discontinuity and non-uniformity in pile concrete already placed

The result is interpreted and defect categorized based on severity of defects

SSG-NG01012401_869393-F07-00047 METHOD STATEMENT FOR OGBOTOBO CFA PILE INSTALLATION & TESTING
CATEGORY A In this category, velocity records do not show any major positive reflections
(impedance reduction) before the toe and clear reflection exists at the nominal depth.
Some negative reflection may occur which indicates bulges. Minor positive reflections
that follow a bulge indicate a return to nominal cross section and are not considered a
problem. This type of records in conjunction with grout factor of at least 1.0 generally
indicates a structurally sound shaft.

CATEGORY B: No indication of a possible defect but no toe reflection for long piles, low strain
waves often do not have sufficient energy to return to the shaft top after reflection
from toe. This condition typically occurs when the pile length is more than 30 to 50
times the nominal shaft diameter, but it is dependent on the amount of shaft
friction present, when shaft fall into this category, pile integrity assessment is only
possible along the shaft.

CATEGORY C: Clear indication of serious defect .Here major positive reflection occurs before the toe
and no reflection is evident at the nominal depth.

CATEGORY D: Indication of Possible defect, often toe reflection present. This category includes
piles that show positive velocity reflection but still clear toe reflection

CATEGORY E: Records do not support any conclusion. This includes piles with inconclusive
records due to bad

4.2.1 Procedure

For all piles in this project which are cast-in-place concrete piles or concrete filled pipe piles, the
integrity testing is performed no sooner than 7 days after casting or after concrete strength achieves
at least 75 % of its design strength, whichever occurs earlier. It is ensured that the pile head surface is
accessible, above water, and clean of loose concrete, soil or other foreign materials resulting from
construction. If the pile head is contaminated, sufficient pile section shall be removed to reach sound
concrete: because proper pile top preparation is critical to the successful application of this method, if
a necessary, small area is prepared by a hand grinder to provide a smooth surface for motion sensor
attachment and impact.

The accelerometer must be firmly affixed to the pile top in order to measure the high-frequency
motion of that surface during impact and reflection. For best results, the accelerometer should be
bonded to the pile top. Petroleum jelly works nicely in cold weather. Other adhesive materials such as
plastic clay or bowl sealer wax can also be used.

 The motion sensor (Transducer) is placed at or near the pile head using a suitable, or temporary,
thin layer of bonding material (that is, wax, Vaseline, putty etc.) so that it is assured that it
correctly measures the axial pile motion (transducer axis of sensitivity aligned with the pile axis).
 The motion sensor is placed generally near the center of the pile. Additional locations should be
considered for piles with diameters greater than 500 mm.
SSG-NG01012401_869393-F07-00047 METHOD STATEMENT FOR OGBOTOBO CFA PILE INSTALLATION & TESTING
 The low strain impact is applied to the pile head within a distance of 300 mm from the motion
sensor. If the pile head is not accessible, as when already integral with the structure, the sensor(s)
may be attached to the side of the pile.
 The signals from the motion sensor are conveyed to the Pile Integrity Tester (PIT) for
recording, reducing, and displaying data as a function of time. The PIT includes a graphic
display of velocity, and a data storage capability for retrieving records for further analysis.
 Measurement from several impacts is recorded. Suitable records of at least three impacts are
averaged and necessary amplification to the averaged record is applied. The records from the
individual impacts or the averaged record, or both taken as the averaged, amplified record are
then evaluated for integrity.

4.2.2 Materials and Equipment

 Pulse Echo Tester equipment

 Grinding machine with concrete grinder
 Brush

4.2.3 Personnel and Responsibilities

5.1 Prior to Construction

Prior to construction the inspector shall have and review the following:

 Project plans and specifications;

 Geotechnical report and/or other available subsurface information

 Contractor’s approved installation plan;

 Details of load test program or pre-production test pile installations;

 Details of required automated monitoring system and control parameters;

 Details of concrete mix design and sampling and testing requirements; and

 Reinforcing details and methods for pile top finishing and cutoff levels.

5.2 On-Site Review of Contractor’s Equipment

Upon arrival at the jobsite, the inspector shall take the time to thoroughly review the
contractor’s equipment for compliance with the plans and specifications and approved
installation plan.

This work includes:

• Check-in to understand day’s planned work and confirm that party responsible for concrete
sampling is at site.
• Document auger diameter and length, auger pitch, concrete (each truck
immediately when delivered), reinforcing type, and configuration.
• Check calibration concrete volume monitoring equipment, and other
Measurement equipment for which calibration is required. Confirm that monitoring
equipment is set to record at proper depth intervals as required.
• Check equipment condition and tolerances

SSG-NG01012401_869393-F07-00047 METHOD STATEMENT FOR OGBOTOBO CFA PILE INSTALLATION & TESTING
5.3 During Drilling

• Confirm that pile location is within horizontal tolerances and pile plumbness is within the
range specified.
• Confirm plug placed at auger bit tip.
• Confirm the location of the pile to be constructed, so that relevant sub surface
conditions, pile construction requirements (i.e., pile number, embedment depth, cut- off,
and batter, if required) can be quickly and accurately referenced.
• Document auger verticality or specified batter, as applicable. Document cuttings and auger
advance rate.
• Confirm for consistency with conditions disclosed in geotechnical report, pile test report, and
load test report.
• Confirm removal of excessive cuttings/spoil build-up around auger.
• Monitor behavior of the pile and surrounding ground during construction of test pile
foundations. Check for indications of ground subsidence or loss of fluid concrete.

5.4 During Concrete Placement

o Document concrete properties (batch time, temperature, additives, and flow) and those
samples that have been obtained for strength testing at the intervals, per project
specifications.
o Document the pile grouting/concreting operation, including immediate start of Placement and
pumping of initial concrete volume and pressure head, and auger withdrawal rates, per approved
installation plan. Confirm (from automated monitoring data and observations) that target
minimum concrete factor is attained along the length of the pile. Confirm for consistency with
reported conditions disclosed in geotechnical report, test pile report, and
load test report.
o Document depth at which concrete return is first observed. Confirm consistency with
conditions disclosed in geotechnical report, test pile report, and load test report.
o Should a discontinuity in grout/concrete return or other questionable conditions be
observed, inform the contractor of the condition and note the conditions observed on pile logs
or data sheets. In some cases, the contractor may re-drill the pile to the full length. Re- drilling
the pile to less than the full length to restart the concreting operation is generally considered
unacceptable.
o Confirm continuous and steady auger pull, with slow positive auger rotation if approved in
the installation plan, and concrete pumping until auger tip comes out of the ground.
Document total volume of grout/concrete pumped, and overall grout/concrete factor.
Obtain pile records from automated monitoring equipment.
o Confirm that the pile top is cleared of any debris or contaminated grout or concrete.

SSG-NG01012401_869393-F07-00047 METHOD STATEMENT FOR OGBOTOBO CFA PILE INSTALLATION & TESTING
5.5 During Reinforcement Placement and Pile Top Finishing

 Document reinforcement installed in pile that is in accordance with specified design.

 Document any installation difficulties, especially since they may be indicative of potential
obstructions or undesired inclusions in the pile. In general, the most cost effective and time
saving remedial measure is to re-drill and re-grout the pile if suspect conditions are observed.
 Confirm that reinforcing is free of auger spoils or rust prior to insertion.
 Confirm that reinforcing has specified extension above proposed cut-off elevation.
 Confirm that the pile top finishing is performed in a manner consistent with the project
requirements, including any forms above grade and tie-off details of the reinforcement.

5.6 Post-Installation

• Check for concrete subsidence.

• Inspect pile cut-off.
• Ensure that any post-construction integrity testing or proof load testing is scheduled and
performed in a timely manner and that any questionable or rejected piles are noted and the
appropriate notification is provided to the contractor.
