COMPARISON OF COEFFICIENT OF

VISCOSITIES OF TWO LIQUID

Expt. No. 4 Date: 16/08/2017

Aim:

To compare the coefficient of viscosity of two liquids by capillary flow method.

Apparatus required :

1) Burette 2) Capillary tube 3) Stop clock 4) Two liquids ( water and kerosene)

Formula :

The ratio of the co-efficient of viscosity of two liquids.

Where

– density of I liquid ( water 1000 kgm -3)

– density of II liquid ( kerosene 830 kgm -3)
– time of flow for I liquid
– time of flow for II liquid

Procedure:

A clear and dry graduated burette is clamped vertically and connected to the capillary tube by means of
a rubber tube provided with a pinch clip. The capillary tube is arranged horizontally.

The burette is filled with I liquid. When the pinch clip is opened the level of I-liquid in the burette
comes to zero mark, a stop clock is started and the time II' are noted as the level of the I-liquid reaches
5,10,15,20 cc.... etc.

The burette is washed, dried and filled with II-liquid. Under identical conditions.
The time of flow for II0liquid 't' for the same range is noted. The ratio t1/t2 is calculated for each range
and its mean value is found and with the densities of the two liquids the ration is found. Then the ratio
of the coefficients of viscosities of two liquids is calculated.

Calculation:

Density of I – Liquid = 1000 kgm -3

Density of II – liquid = 830 kgm -3

The ratio p1/p2 = 1000/830 = 1.2048

Mean value of t1/t2 = 6.698

The ratio of the co-efficient of viscosity of two liquids =

Result :

The ratio of the co-efficient of viscosity of two liquids
