and non-employer busi-
nesses, which comprise ap-
proximately half of Ameri-
ca’s businesses.
These small business-
es, employing 50 people or
fewer, fill niche markets,
innovate, and contribute
to the competition in free
markets.
These small business-
es also give individuals
the chance to achieve their
own versions of the Amer-
ican Dream, and allow
entry into employment by
women and minorities, as
well as other individuals
who might otherwise be
shut out of the labor mar-
ket.
To help potential entre-
preneurs reach their goal of
‘Outback in the Ozarks’ 200-mile
team relay celebrates its fifth year

SPRINGDALE, Ark.–
“Outback in the Ozarks” is
an adventurous, 200-mile,
12 person, overnight team
relay held in the ruggedness
and beauty of northwest Ar-
kansas’ Ozark Mountains.
“We tell people they’re
not alone in the Outback.
They have the strength and
support of their teams,”
said Kimberlee Guin, race
director, Outback in the
Ozarks.
Outback in the Ozarks
has been challenging and
inspiring participants for
half a decade.
The event celebrates its
fifth anniversary this fall
when the race kicks off on
October 27.
“For the past five years
we’ve been asking partic-
ipants if they can conquer
the Outback. Many of them

County is offering, “Start-
ing a Small Business: The
First Steps.”
The class is scheduled
for Wednesday, Sept. 6 at
the University of Missouri
Extension 321 North Main
Street Ste. 1, Perryville at
6 p.m.
“Starting a Small Busi-
ness: The First Steps is
vital to anyone considering
opening a business of any
kind,” said Richard Proffer,
University of Missouri Ex-
tension Business Develop-
ment Specialist.
“In one evening we
cover a lot of material, in-
cluding business owner-
ship and planning, govern-
ment regulations, market-
ing, and financing, just to
name a few subjects. We
help participants identi-
don’t know. They’ve never
done anything like this be-
fore. Our event pushes peo-
ple mentally and physical-
ly. It’s amazing to see the
transformation in our run-
ners as they cross the fin-
ish line. They figuratively
and literally have climbed
mountains,” said Guin.
Outback in the Ozarks
gives back to the commu-
nity. A portion of the rev-
enue generated by this
event goes to the Friends of
Hobbs State Park.
“Our race takes partic-
ipants through five state
parks in northwest Arkan-
sas. These parks are beau-
tiful. We can’t thank them
enough. Friends of Hobbs
State Park is a wonderful
non-profit organization,”
said Guin.

state and federal organiza-
