It was a grand party, but... whoops.

A huge apology to Hilda (at left) and Adeline for the mix-up on the front page
of Monday's Buzz. We promise to get it right next year!
Here's a *T*I*P*
The "one cent piece" is the official name used by
the U.S. Treasury, for the lowest denomination coin
in the United States. The U.S. Mint's official name for
the coin is “cent” as in one-hundredth of a dollar or an
abbreviation of “percent.” It is also commonly known as
the “penny”, derived from the British coin by the same
denomination. Over the years the amount of copper
decreased and several different metals were used in
combination. In 1982 the one cent piece became copper
plated zinc.
In 2021 the unit cost for both pennies (2.10 cents)
and nickels (8.52 cents) remained above face value for
the 16th consecutive fiscal year.
Copper peaked in 2011 to about $4.54 per pound,
after bottoming out at $1.29 per pound in 2008. This
week copper was at $4.00 per pound (April 5th).
In our area (Daniels County) it was common, and
maybe still is, to see mostly Canadian pennies. At one
time, it was cheaper to bring the copper coins down
from Canada than it was to pay to have them shipped
in. However, Canada no longer mints a penny. Over
the years several bills to eliminate the coin have been
presented and failed in the U.S. Congress.
Seigniorage, the difference between the face value
and cost of producing circulating coinage, continues to
spread, creating greater losses on pennies and nickels.
Last year the Mint lost $83.6 million on pennies and $61
million on nickels.
Stop, if you’re thinking of collecting the pre-1982
pennies to melt down, besides the storage room needed
to collect enough to amount to much money, it’s illegal.
In 2006, due to increased values of copper and other
metals, the government put in place a penalty of a
$10,000 fine or 5 years in prison or both, for melting
down pennies and nickels.
From the Mint’s 2021 annual report: “Established in
1792, the Mint is the world’s largest coin manufacturer.
Since Fiscal Year (FY) 1996, the Mint has operated under
the Public Enterprise Fund (PEF) (31 U.S.C. § 5136).
The PEF enables the Mint to operate without an annual
appropriation. The Mint generates revenue through the
sale of circulating coins to the Federal Reserve Banks
(FRB), numismatic products to the public, and bullion
coins to authorized purchasers. Revenue in excess of
amounts required by the PEF is transferred to the United
States Treasury (Treasury) General Fund.” In 2021 that
amount was $120 million. Well, that’s my two cents.
