Computer’s Capabilities

Computer can provide access to information , foster creative social

knowledge-building and enhance communication of the achieved project package.
Modern computer can help teacher - and - students to focus on more high level
cognitive task.

A Teacher can employ Computer as :

 An information tool
 A communication tool
 A constructive tool
 As co-constructive tool
 A situating tool

Informative tool

 Computer can provide vast amount of information in various forms

 Text
 Graphics
 Sounds
 Videos
 Multimedia encyclopedia

 The internet itself provides an enormous database from which user can access
global information resources that includes the latest news , weather forecasts ,
airline schedule , sports development , entertainment news and features as well
as educational information directly useful to learners.

 Students can use gathered information for composition or presentation of

project.

Communication tool

 Internet can serve as a channel for global communication.

 Computer can very well be the key tool for video teleconferencing sessions .

Constructive tool

 Computer can be used for manipulating information , visualizing one’s

understanding , and building new knowledge.
 Microsoft Word computer program is a desktop publishing software that allows
users to organize and present their ideas in attractive formats.

Co- constructive tools

 Student use co-constructive tools to work cooperatively and construct a shared
understanding of new knowledge.
 Use of electronic whiteboard where students post notices to a shared
document/white board.
 Computer-Supported Intentional Learning Environments (CSILE) , students can
enter their notes and respond to each other’s ideas.

Situating tool
 By means of virtual reality extension systems, the computer can create 3-D
images on display to give users the feeling that are situated in a virtual
environment.
 Examples :
Flight simulators
Car simulators
Multi-User Domains or Dungeons (MUD)
MUD Object Oriented (MOO)
Multi-User Shared hallucination (MUSH)
Reflection : Computer in school as a teacher’s handy tool in the
learning and teaching process.

1. Computer can be an 1. A teacher gives a research work

information tool to both to the students. He urge them to
teacher and students find all they can about the
subject using/browsing the
internet.

2. Computer serve as a 2. The teacher gives his student a

communication tool project for them to fill. They
must create their email address
and perform the activities. All
concerns about the project must
be sent to his email address and
it should be passed to him
through email.

3. Computer as a constructive 3. Students are assigned a lesson

tool to be reported in the class. They
should use power point
presentation as they present
their reports.

4. Computer can be used as a 4. Students are given a certain

co-constructive tool task in making the project of
the whole class. They are
encourage to work
cooperatively thru
communicating through
internet about the progress of
their work.

5. As a situating tool 5. For his student to have a near

real life experience and have
the in depth idea about the
solar system , the teacher bring
them to a studio of virtual
reality that depicts images of
the solar system.
LESSON 12 INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN SUPPORT OF
STUDENT-CENTERED LEARNING

 Student Centered Learning - student is in the center of the teaching-learning

process.

 How a Student Centered Classroom (SCL) can be supported by information

technology (IT)

Traditional Classroom
 Chairs are arranged in neat columns and rows
 Teacher stands in front of the classroom or sit behind his desk
 Classroom activities is through lecture presentation and teacher-led
discussions.
 Teachers often make students take time to work individually on worksheets.

The SCL classroom

 The students are active not passive learners
 Students interact with others, demonstrating independence and self-
awareness in the learning process
 New school classroom environment is characterized by student individually
or by groups.
 As needed, the teacher facilitating instruction, also giving individualized
instruction to serve individual needs.
 Students no longer need to mark the test of peers since computer has
programs for test evaluation and computerized scoring results

 Given this new trend in teaching-and-learning, however traditional classroom

activities – especially in the less developed countries - will continue to have a
strong place in the classroom. In some countries, the option has now been
opened for the modern teacher to shift gears to student-centered learning.
Reflection : From Traditional classroom
settings to a student centered
learning classroom.

Traditional Classroom Student Centered Classroom

1. The teacher gives an activity to 1. In the SCL classroom the
his student. He demonstrates the teacher gives his instruction on
what and how to do it for his the activity and let the student
students to perform the intended decide how they could perform
activity and discover what they could
learn out of that activity

2. The teacher instruct his student to 2. The students make researches

make a research on eg. The on the internet, downloaded
Human Circulatory system and graphic materials and pictures
make a presentation on the class. and make power point
The student present their research presentation making the report
using fact sheets using typewriter more interesting. They can
and drawings on cartolina. even add a video related to the
topic being presented.

3.In order to get ideas for the school 3. For the school program to be
program to be facilitated by the well executed , the teacher
class, the teacher let student one divide the students into groups
at a time to give his idea and assigned a designated task
for each group. They are
responsible for what and how
they would present their part in
the program and choose the
available materials to enhanced
their performances.

4. In teaching how to use the 4. In teaching how to use the

computer the teacher brings a computer, the teacher gives
computer to the class and instructions on the procedures
demonstrate how to use it and let the students perform
and learn at their own pace.
LESSON 13 COOPERATIVE LEARNING WITH THE
COMPUTER

Cooperative Learning – also called collaborative learning

- Is a learning by small groups of students who work together in a
common learning task
- Often called group learning

5 Elements

1. A common goal
2. Interdependence
3. Interaction
4. Individual accountability
5. Social skills

Advantages

1. Encourages active learning , while motivating students

2. Increases academic performance
3. Promotes literacy and language skills
4. Improve teacher effectiveness

Cooperative Learning and the Computer

 Studies shows that when students work with computers in groups they
cluster and interact with each other, for advice and mutual help
 Psychologists think the computer fosters positive social behaviour due to
the fact that it has a display monitor – just like television set – that is looked
upon as something communal.

 Computer is a fairly natural learning vehicle for cooperative learning.

Components of Cooperative Learning

1. Assigning students to mixed-ability terms

2. Establishing positive interdependence
3. Teaching cooperative social skills
4. Insuring individual accountability
5. Helping groups process information

 The teacher should limit learning group clusters so that there can be closer
involvement in thinking and learning.
 Teacher should assign a common work goal in which each member of the group
will realized that their group will not succeed unless everyone contribute to the
groups success.
