I conducted a research in the main office location for a construction firm named Therml
In my research, I interviewed one administrated personal worker and two different departments
managers. In the work place’s interviews, I discovered the five mayor issues they are dealing
with at this location. These workers spend many hours seating at their desks, typing on the
computer or researching laws and regulations online. Also, the scheduling and coordination of
different projects.
Some of chairs are outdated office chairs, not ergonomically designed that cause back, and neck
pain. Other subject’s desks are too low and the person has to hunch over the desk too reach the
keyboard. The ambience lighting is the correct one, but every one of the desks is missing a task
lighting fixture to illuminate the paper work directly (forms, blue prints, printed documents, etc.)
to avoid straining their eyes. Another important issue to be resolve is to upgrade the outdated
equipment. The computer monitors are fixed on the desk and cannot be adjusted, the monitors
are taking away space from the work surface and are not at eye level. Privacy is another mayor
issue at this office. With the intension of having an open office design, there are 8 cubicles in a
small office. Workers are able to hear each other’s conversations and/or can’t concentrate on
Ideally, in an ergonomically design office the office chair should recline and the seat height can
be approximately 17.5”, while the desk height is around 27.0”. The computer monitor should
have an adjustable arm that provides comfort, because it can be tilted and positioned at eye level.
Every desk should have a task light to ensure the safety of the user. Reading documents with bad
The workers I interviewed need to interact with each other daily in this line of work, but
also, they need their quite time to do some research and calculations. To provide privacy and
interaction between workers, higher cubicle panels and the installation of headphone is will be
good solution.
The office has sufficient storage for paper work and files because most of their work is on the
computer. The electrical wiring data cabling are properly distributed and organized.

Co-working Area

Project Statement:
The flagship hotel is redesigning the first and second floor of its building.
On the first floor the plan is to have a co-working open space where clients can work and
network. This must be a welcoming space that cultivates creativity, where the user is inspired
and comfortable enough to do the necessary work.
Here, the hotel will provide a 24-hour self-serve kitchen with fountain drinks and coffee, and a
kitchen area that can seat up to 12 people.
Also, two office spaces, a conference room, and collaborated seating areas with a total capacity
of 50 people.
The second floor will contain the corporate offices like the accounting, sales, information
technology and executive offices with their necessary shared spaces, and restrooms.
Design Solution Statement:
As the client pointed out, the most important element of the first floor of the Flash Ship Hotel, is the feel of
openness. The sculptural staircase will be the focal point of the larger room. Using Art Deco Style furniture and
muted colors the place will be inviting. Adding a few vintage accessories, and sleek light fixtures will give the
space an elegant feel.
Here, the users will feel comfortable to exchange ideas and network when necessary.
The client requested to use soft surface flooring, for that reason we are installing carpet tiles in the large areas
and light color engineered wood in the enclosed areas, like offices and conference room.
Per client’s request the second floor will be more private. The corporate offices will be enclosed, but set up in an
interactive way using collaborative desks. Muted colors on the wall, will provide a clean canvas that can be
accessorized later.

Reflection
The Commercial Design class, was a taste of a real-life experience. Planning a commercial
space was definitely challenging for me. Here I learned about co-working spaces and how
important they are for creativity and performance. The class intel a lot of AutoCAD
drawings that were very time consuming. Revisiting the ADA standards regulation, is
always useful because it keeps the designer up to date and knowledgeable. The most
challenging part of the class in my opinion was sketching and drawing the section of the
stairs in auto CAD.
Overall, the class was interesting and I feel like I’m one step closer to completing my
dream of becoming and interior designer.
