SAFETY CHECKLIST

Helicopter/Ship Operation

To be checked by the officer in charge


a) Have all loose objects within and adjacent to the operating are been secured or removed? 
b) Have all benches been removed from the operation area (if applicable)? 
c) Have all aerials, standing or running gear above and in the vicinity of the operating area

been lowered or secured?
d) Has a pennant or windsock been hoisted where it can be clearly seen by the helicopter

pilot?
e) Has the officer of the watch been consulted about the ship’s readiness? 
f) Does the leader of the deck party have a portable radio transceiver for communication

with the bridge?
g) Are the fire pumps running and is there adequate pressure on deck? 
h) Are fire hoses ready (hoses should be near to but clear of the operating area)? 
i) Are foam hoses, monitors and portable foam equipment ready? 
j) Are dry powder fire extinguishers available and ready for use? 
k) Is the deck party complete, correctly dressed and in position? 
l) Are the fire hoses and foam nozzles pointing away from the operating area in case of

inadvertent discharge?
m) Has a rescue party been detailed? 
n) Is a rescue boat ready for lowering? 
o) Are the following items of equipment to hand? 
Large ax 
Crowbar 
Wire cutters 
Red emergency signal/torch 
Marshalling batons (at night) 
First aid equipment 
p) Has the correct lighting (including special navigation lights) been switched on prior to

night operations, and not directed toward the helicopter?
q) Is the deck party ready, wearing brightly colored tabard (waistcoats) and protective

helmets, and are all passengers clear of the operating area?
r) Has the hook handler been equipped with helmet, strong rubber gloves and rubber soled

shoes to avoid the danger of static discharge?
s) Is access to and egress from the operating area clear? 
t) Has the radar been secured or placed in standby mode just before the helicopter arrives? 
u) Has a lifejacket been provided to the nurse accompanying the patient into the helicopter

(if applicable)?
