CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
This research examines the issues of the relation between Social Media and its
impact on behavior change of the youth. Children are becoming more powerful through
technology, because technology has the ability to unite them. According to Susan
Greenfield (2010), an Oxford University researcher in her article “The Quest for Identity
in the 21st Century”, on Daily Mail UK 14th September, 2010, as growing numbers of
people discover the potential of the World Wide Web and as they become active parts of
crowd sourcing phenomenon. This research will tackle what these social media will have
effects on the youth. How long they use it in their lives as a student and their implications
on their behavior. These tools have become valued elements of life in Kenya merely
because they opened many doors to youth and allowed them to interact freely and
markedly unlike at any other time in history. In Kenya, college and university campuses
have been hit by new generations of youth coming from high schools with quite a decent
knowledge about information technology and how to use its tools, especially cellular
phones and computers. While any technology can be put to good or bad use, depending
on the user, many parents have bought their children cellular phones and PCs so they
may use 2 them appropriately and effectively, mainly for learning purposes as well as
knowing where they are at any time and come to their help if they need it. But there are
also some negative effects, according to Susan Greenfield (2014) Facebook, Instagram,
Twitter, video games and news.com.au all provide endless distractions, as well as more
opportunities to share, connect and spout your views than ever before. Some information
about yourself and some private things about you may spread or know by others. It can
also limit your time with your family or your bonding with your family if you only focus on
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and other activities including social media. According to
Alex Direnzo (2016) Anything that takes up large amounts of your time, including work,
watching TV, exercising or driving, has some impact on your health. The question is
whether social media is good or bad for us. The simple answer is that it can be both.
Fortunately, there are ways to help reduce its harmful effects while maximizing the
benefits. It also has some impacts in your health like addiction, stress etc. That’s why we
Technology has always been continuously progressing up to the point that the
rapid growth and advancement of technology has made the impossible penetrable.
Technology can be seen all around us. Technological advancement had proved its worth
in helping people in making their jobs easier. In making this thesis, we had to use
computers in encoding such work. Scholars are one of the beneficiaries of these
One of the advancement that our technology had produced is the Social Media. A
medium that spread across the globe, making communications much easier, reliable, and
convenient, creating a bridge nation to nation. Social Media had made its way on top of
peoples live. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other sites has been common on the daily
life of a common people. Social Media is now on its point of ruling where we might be
The rapid growth of Social Media has had a profound effect not only on our
personal lives but also in our world of being. Social media are computer-mediated
technologies that facilitate the creation and sharing of information, ideas, career interests
and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. The variety of stand-
alone and built-in social media services currently available introduces challenges of
definition. Boyd and Ellison (2008: 210-230) have summarized recent research and social
network history. The authors, Berkeley and Michigan State professors, consider social
audience size and market research potential. Boyd and Ellison explain that SixDegrees
(1997) was chronologically the first social network but disappeared in 2000. Their
audience growth has been explosive. In April 2009, Facebook had 200 million users
users. Only 26% of the users are in the United States: we are facing a genuinely global
phenomenon.
In the recent generation, Social Media has become a necessity to each individual.
It makes our works easier and faster such as; communicating, researching, getting news
and so forth. On the contrary, despite of its beneficial effects it also has bad effects
brought on us. In this study, the perspective of the chosen respondents or students of
Polytechnic University of the Philippines (SHS) will be conveyed with regards to the
positive and negative impact of the said matter. The main rationale of this is to evaluate
how millennials looks at the instantaneous development of Social Media and how they
view it personally; in positive or negative ways and usage. As a Social Media enthusiast,
how do you think it affects your personal daily life positively? Are you coping up with it
21st century is the era of modern technology where every people have had a

necessity, these devices allow us to across the world, making long distances shorter, it
allows us to connect with each other with just one click of a button. Technology had
become a worldwide necessity. 21st century is the century where technology is ruling in
With technology, Social Media became possible a virtual word where people can
connect, interact, and social from short distances to long distances with just a click
anytime, anywhere. With Social Media, we are allowed to travel from places to places
across the globe. We are allowed to visit and communicate with a loved one far from us.
With social media, time and space can become shorter. Social Media is a bridge, a
bridge that connects people across the world, making interaction and
communications easier, Social Media is everything thus making Social Media another
world-wide necessity.
Technology has always played an important role in human life and it has been
conducted in various ways depending on the culture and location. Later on, the roots of
social media stretch far deeper than we might imagine. Although it seems like a new
trend, sites like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter are the natural outcome of many centuries
In earlier times, the methods of communicating across great distances used written
correspondence delivered by hand from one person to another, also known as letters.
The earliest form of postal service dates back to 550 B.C., and this primitive delivery
By 1792, the telegraph was invented which allowed messages to be delivered over
a long distance far faster than a horse and rider could carry them. Although telegraph
messages were short, they were a revolutionary way to convey news and information.

recipients. A pneumatic post utilizes underground pressurized air tubes to carry capsules
The two important discoveries happened in the last decade of the 1800s: The
Technology nowadays is still in use, although the modern versions are much more
sophisticated than their predecessors. Telephone lines and radio signals enabled people
began. In the 1940s first super computer was created, scientists and engineers began to
develop ways to create networks between those computers, and this lead to the existence
of the Internet.
CompuServe was the earliest forms of the internet and was developed in the
1960s. Primitive forms of email were also developed during this time. By the 70s,
networking technology had improved, and 1979’s UseNet allowed users to communicate
By the 1980s, home computers were becoming more common and social media
was becoming more sophisticated. Internet relay chats, or IRCs, were first used in 1988
Six Degrees, the first known recognizable social media site and was created in
1997. It enabled users to upload a profile and make friends with other users. In 1999, the
first blogging sites became popular, creating a social media sensation that’s still popular
today.
After the invention of blogging, social media began to explode in popularity. Sites
like MySpace and LinkedIn gained prominence in the early 2000s, and sites like
Photobucket and Flickr facilitated online photo sharing. YouTube came out in 2005,
creating an entirely new way for people to communicate and share with each other across
great distances.
In year 2006, Facebook and Twitter both became available to users throughout the
world. These sites remain some of the most popular social networks on the Internet. Other
sites like Tumblr, Spotify, Foursquare and Pinterest began popping up to fill specific social
networking niches.
Today, there is an enormous variety of social networking sites, most of them can
even though it reaches the maximum number of users in our environment. We can only
theorize about what the future of social networking may look in the next decade or even
100 years from now, but it seems clear that it will exist in some form for as long as humans
are alive.
On the other hand, Social Media became a reality to some people’s lives. Some
people are being too consumed in this technology where these innovations had become
an obstacle in doing an everyday work. Of course, there will always be two sides of a coin.
Social Media can be used positively or negatively. Social Media could be a bright place
or a dark place where people’s lives could be ruined with just one click. Social Media is
not just a place or a necessity. Social Media had become a power, it became a powerful
medium in peoples live. It can do everything with just one single click of a button. But as

In general, it is the young people who become addicted to social media. Economic
problems, psychological disorders and physical inabilities cause individuals to escape real

relationships and isolated individuals. Lack of knowledge and failure of parents to guide
their children on proper use of social media are among the main reasons triggering social

on social networking sites, and inability to control oneself to access these sites, there is
media addiction in a person. For a social media addict the distinction between real and
