Fiber (mathematics)

In mathematics , the fiber of a point y in

Y with respect to a function f  :  X     Y is
the inverse image (preimage) of a singlet
{ y } with respect to f , that is:

It is also said that this is the fiber of f in y

, and is usually denoted with .

In many applications, the concept of fiber

is referred to as a set of levels of y with
respect to f , or set of levels of f in y . If f
is continuous and y is in the image of f
then the set of level of y with respect to f
is a curve (in 2 dimensions) or a surface
(in three dimensions), in general a
hypersurface (in d-1 dimensions ).

In algebraic geometry the notion of fiber

of a morphism must be formulated with
greater attention because in general not
every point is closed. In this case, if f  :  X

Y is a scheme morphism then the
fiber of a point p in Y is the fibered
product , where k ( p )
is the residual field in p .
