(Patagonia austral) and understand conflicts between water users from two river basins in Chile,
that, despite their location in completely different areas (one a desert, the other
an extreme south-austral zone), have similarities in socio-environmental
conflict, since in both cases the existence of mega-projects (one, a mine, the
other, a hydroelectric plant) has generated diverse visions of development
between the directly affected local communities and the transnational
corporations. The paper reflects on these similarities and the socio-
environmental struggles they are experiencing, concluding that IWRM is the way
to raise awareness and seek solutions to environmental conflicts in the current
era of "neoliberal ecocide".

ANGELA This article is based on a review of the history of oil exploration and production
TRUJILLO in Colombia during the past hundred years, characterized as an activity whereby
the lands inhabited by ancestral native and peasant communities are invaded. It
proposes a re􀊐ection on what should be the role of engineering should be in the
humanization of the oil and gas activities. The goal here is to respect the
territorial and cultural patterns of the communities who live in the areas of
in􀊐uence of hydrocarbon projects, proposing that this is a necessary condition
for the quest and achievement of environmental sustainability.
