Interpretation: “To the Young Women of Malolos”

This letter is entitled To the Young Women of Malolos because a group of twenty young

women of Malolos petitioned governor-general Weyler for permission to open a “night

school” so that they might study Spanish under Teodoro Sandiko. This letter tackled the

difference between Filipino men and women, slavery, wrong religious beliefs, the

responsibilities of mothers in the family, Rizal’s advice to the unmarried, and being

abusive by the Spaniards. Rizal was overwhelmed to the young Filipinas of Malolos for

being brave, that’s why he admired them and grateful to them. They demand for education

and it seems that they are no longer blinded by the fake religious beliefs. Rizal placed

great value and high respect for women in our country especially on their vital roles as

mothers and wives. Mothers should be a role model to her children, she should’ve teach

her children to love God and how to respect. A Filipino women should know how to protect

her dignity. Rizal wants to tell through his letter that women should have same

opportunities as those receives by men. Filipino women should have the right in their

education even if soon they will just become a housewife because each and every one of

us has the right to have education.
