Description of the artifact and how it meets the standard and criteria:

This artifact is a copy of a math lesson that I taught in my 7th grade pull-out math class.
This lesson plan uses the instructional strategy of scaffolding. In my teacher mentoring
class for first and second year teachers, we have been discussing a variety of research-
based strategies, including scaffolding.

Reflection on the artifact:

Scaffolding is an instructional strategy that I use on a daily basis. The gradual release
of scaffolding instruction helps me shift the learning from the teacher to the student.
When I first present a concept, I use strategies of metacognition to explain my thinking
aloud. After I model, I have the students help me with several problems. I might ask
students “What should I do next?” My questioning gets students involved in their own
learning and forces them to explain their thinking. After students assist me, I have them
work with a partner or small group to further the concept together. Finally, I have
students show me mastery independently. I adjust the time our class spends on each
of these phases based on several checks for understanding. Scaffolding is a valuable
strategy that works well with my content and style of teaching.
