Activity Plan

Age/Grade: 4 years old

Curricular Domain: Cognitive

Objectives: After making and playing with play dough students will be able to:

 Demonstrate knowledge on the basic mathematical concept of sorting and measuring.

 Describe the steps for making play dough

 Further develop their fine motor skills

Materials:

 6 cups flour

 1 cup vegetable oil

 1 cup water

 food coloring

 mixing bowl

Activity:
1. Invite students to help you make play dough. Explain that you will be taking turns

measuring and pouring the ingredients. Allow students to measure and pour the salt into

the bowl. Let students taste the salt and ask if he likes it.

2. Measure in the oil.

3. Invite a student to help you measure the flour.

4. Add drops of food coloring to the water. Allow students to observe how food coloring

spreads in the water. Ask, What do you think will happen when we mix water and food

coloring? Then pour in the water. Encourage the student to stir the ingredients until the

mixture thickens. Throughout this activity, ask questions. Where did the salt and water

go? What does it feel like?

5. Note: add more water as needed. Ask, What happened when you added more water?

What does it feel like now? What do you think will happen if we add more flour?

6. Divide the dough into equal parts for each student.

7. Encourage students to experiment with the dough. Ask questions regarding their

creations, What have you created? How did you make it?

Scaffolding: Listening skills, sorting, early number concepts, basic fine motor skills
