Introduction

The Problem

Through rampant observation of the researchers, schools’ varsity students don’t receive monthly

allowances

The Objective

This research would like to determine the reasons why student athletes of Pasig Catholic College

don’t receive monthly allowance. Also, the researcher wants to know if it would be fair to PCC

to provide this kind of allowance to its student athletes. This research aims to prove the necessity

for Pasig Catholic College to provide financial assistance in form of monthly allowance for

qualified varsity students of the school.

The qualifications are as follows:

 Has a good moral character

 Maintained an average of 85%

 Has outstanding abilities in the specific sports (to be determined by the coaches)

 Must be a varsity of the school for at least 2 years

 Has a family income of not more than 36,000 php

Cross-Examination

Monthly allowances are sometimes included in the benefits of a scholarship program,

particularly athletic scholarships. They’re awarded for the purpose of aiding financially
challenged and deserving students. However, most schools prioritize academics over sports so

they tend to lack funds to endow such allowances. Pasig Catholic College is one of those private

institutions that don’t offer this kind of financial assistance. They do offer scholarships but

they’re only meant to aid deserving students who wish to avail the school’s quality catholic

education. They have the Fr. Cornelis de Brouwer Scholarship, Fr. Timmermans and Fr. De

Klerck Scholarship program (Equity Scholarhip), and President’s Scholarship program. These

scholarships are one of the major things that add to the school’s expenses so it may be one of the

major reasons why PCC can’t offer athletic scholarships, let alone monthly allowances to varsity

students.

However, there are other schools that indeed offer athletic scholarships with monthly allowances

and they are as follows;

1. Ateneo De Manila University Athletic Scholarships

This grant is a form of financial assistance for all courses. They are awarded to student-athletes

who have excelled in sports and academics. The following are the sports which are granted

scholarship slots: Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Chess, Fencing, Football, Judo,

Lawn Tennis, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tae kwon do, and Volleyball. The University

Athletics Office manages and supports all the Ateneo de Manila University’s accredited athletic

teams, from the Preschool thru to the Loyola Schools. The offices of the University Athletics are

housed in the historic Blue Eagle Gym on Ateneo’s Loyola Heights Campus.
Benefits:

-recruited student-athletes and senior student-athletes are full scholars while the rest have a

discounted tuition fee. a bigger discount depends on how long you’ve been on the active roster of

the team.

-Scholars in need of academic assistance may avail of the tutorial services offered by different

student organizations such as Gabay, Ateneo Mathematics Society (AMS), League of Physicists

(LeaPs) and the Ateneo Chemistry Society (Aches). Scholars may also request for a tutor at the

Office of Admission and Aid (OAA) where upperclass scholars are tapped as tutors. This is

credited as service hours to the tutors.

-ADMU cagers are the only athletes with a monthly allowance of approximately P 3,000.00

-Athletes get free meals after practices and games, as well as shoes and uniforms. They are also

insured, and have exclusive use of the weights room and other sports facilities at ADMU’s Moro

Lorenzo Sports Center.

-The Ateneo Sports Foundation is composed of alumni help in the sports program. Generally, it

grants scholarships and shoulders transportation and accommodations during national

competitions. It also hosts ADMU’s victory parties and sponsors prizes and trips abroad.

2. University of the East

According to a news article published in the university’s news site, qualified athletes who were

chosen during their try-outs can receive athletic scholarship grants and other incentives. (Admin,

2009)

Benefits:

- Full/Half Athletic Grants

- Meal Allowances

- Uniforms and Supplies

- Medical Benefits

3. Far Eastern University

The FEU Athletic Department is dedicated to the total development of the student-athlete. At Far

Eastern University, student-athletes are given the opportunity to train using the best technology

and expertise and exposed to the best competition in intercollegiate athletics in the Philippines.

Athletes are also given the proper environment to pursue their academic goals. FEU currently

has 20 teams in the collegiate division and 4 teams in the high school level through FEU Diliman

participating in ten sports: badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, chess, fencing, football, table

tennis, track and field, taekwondo and indoor volleyball. All 24 teams participate in the

University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) of which FEU is a founding member

(FEU website)
Their Criteria for rewarding:

- To be determined by the Admissions and Financial Assistance Office in coordination with the

Athletics office

- Cheer dancers are considered athletes.

Benefits:

Full tuition and miscellaneous subsidy, effective SY 2014-15.

Other allowances and subsidies that are currently being provided for.

The common denominator of these three is that they’re all well-renowned universities. They

have more students compared to colleges including more options (alternatives) for scholarship

fund sources. This study may not be implemented right away due to lack of funds but the

researchers are looking forward to its implementation in the future.

Below are list of fund raising activities that can fund the proposed project.

 Battle of the Bands

 Auction

 Arts and Crafts fair

 Aerobics-a-thon

 Bake-off

 Dancing Competition

 Film Night

 Fun run

 Annual Appeal
 Open night (Spoken Poetry)

 Old Clothes (Segunda Mana)

 Photo Exhibit

 Recycling

 Sell Treats and Pastries

 Sports Exhibition
Methodology

On January 3, 2018 the researchers created the introduction of the research. On January

4, 2018 the researchers looked for a candidate that is qualified for the research. On January 5,

2018- January 10, 2018 the researchers interviewed student athletes if they want to have

financial assistance and what are the reasons they want it. The researchers’ interviewed three

basketball varsity athletes from different sections and track. The interview took place in the

library at lunch time. On the same day the researchers interviewed coaches from basketball and

swimming department of the school if they want to approve the said plan for the student athlete.

On January 10, 2018- January 20, 2018 the researchers interviewed the coaches and the parents

of the student athletes what are their jobs, does their salary fits their everyday expenses and how

do they manage their money. On January 20, 2018- January 24, 2018 the researchers provided

the task to the respondents in which they may ask to answer questions about implementing

Financial Assistance. On January 25.2018 the researchers created the methodology of the

research and the data that has been gathered. The researchers created a discussion and results.

nagtetraining na kami so wala talaga kaming pahinga.”

How much do you spend in transportation and food for the extra training days? (i.e. Weekends

and Vacations)

“Siguro mga nakaka-200 pesos ako sa extra days ng training name, minimum na iun kasi

minsan pagkatapos nung training, magugutom tapos kakain sa labas, maraming gustong

kainin kase pagod. So ayun, nakaka-200 pesos ako pag ganun.”

Does the school provide you any financial support? (i.e. transportation, food etc.)

“Ang pinoprovide lang nila samin yung transportation and food kapag mismong game na

outside the school. Breakfast and lunch lang tapos minsan wala, minsan meron.”
Do you think there is a need for monthly financial support for your transportation? Why?

“Sa akin, walang problema sa mga gagastusin sa transpo ang iniisip lang kase yung mga

teammates ko na hindi naman kase lahat kami nagkakapera agad so meron talaga dapat

na financial support para samin galling sa school.”

Would you feel extra motivated to play and train if there is financial support? Why?

“Sa tingin ko kase kung gusto mo talaga kase yung isang bagay, lalo na yung paglalaro,

kahit walang bayad ayos lang yon pero yung financial support kase parang extra lang yan

parang pamalit sa binibigay mong effort so para sakin kahit wala ayos lang . Pero syempre,

kung meron mang ganun, mas nakakamotivate kase nakakakuha ka ng support mula sa

school. Mas magiging passionate ka.”

Do you get extra credits for being a varsity?

“Uhmm, acknowledgement lang siguro. Pagkilala lang mula sa school, makikilala ka ng

mga teacher ganun tapos yung mga praise nila sayo kada maganda yung laro mo saka

yung motivation na binibigay nila sayo, yun lang.”

If the school cannot provide financial support, what do you think should be an alternative? Why?

“Ah sana maging consistent na lang yung pagbibigay nila ng proper transportation saka yung

food kase minsan mas ano wala silang napoprovide na transpo saka food kase minsan may
laro kami ng Sunday which is hindi naman available yung school natin so walang food galing

How much do you spend in transportation and food for the extra training days? (i.e. Weekends

and Vacations)

"Pag sa bakasyon, siguro mga 70, minimum lang yun.”

Does the school provide you any financial support? (i.e. transportation, food etc.)

“Hindi. Hindi kami binibigyan, ano lang binibigay samin, pagkain. Breakfast tapos lunch

tapos tuwing may laban lang yun. Kapag regular training days lang, wala talaga."

Do you think there is a need for monthly financial support for your transportation? Why?

"Oo kailangan yon, kasi hindi naman kami mayayamang mga varsity player, kaya kailangan

din talaga namin. Wala pa naman kaming income syemrpe sa parents pa rin naming yun

kukuhanin."

Would you feel extra motivated to play and train if there is financial support? Why?
"Oo naman, kasi ano mas gaganahan kami magtraining saka maglaro pag may financial

support.”

Do you get extra credits for being a varsity?

“ Sa grades kaso minsan lang, depende din kasi sa teacher. Kung gusto nilang bigyan ng

consideration yung varsity player."

If the school cannot provide financial support, what do you think should be an alternative? Why?

"Pinili naman namin maging varsity kaya siguro kailangan lang namin bigyan ng pansin

yon. Kung wala mang financial support kahit sa food na lang kase ano eh, para mabawasan

din yung mga gagastusin.”

Third Interviewee

Name: Jald Delos Reyes Section: Pope Gregory I Track: ABM

How often do you train?

“Ano, pag nagtetraining kasi kami parang palagi, tapos summer palang umpisa na ng

masasakyan namin, tapos yung food. Pero pagdating sa money, wala talaga.Consistent yon,

lagi kaming may breakfast saka lunch, Kapag may game. Kapag training lang, wala talaga as

in.”

Do you think there is a need for monthly financial support for your transportation? Why?

"Para sa akin okay lang kung wala pero mas okay kung meron. Nung sumali naman kase

kami alam na talaga naming walang ganun kaya siguro okay lang pero ano uhmm mas okay

talaga kung meron.”

Would you feel extra motivated to play and train if there is financial support? Why?

"Sa tingin ko oo, minsan kasi yung iba kaya hindi nakakapagtraining, hindi nila nagagawa

yung mga ano nila alam kung ano uunahin nila, pwedeng may mawawalang isa, ganon."

Do you get extra credits for being a varsity?

"Wala, wala kaming nakukuhang ganon, kumbaga maski dagdag sa grades wala. Talagang

may mga prof or adviser pa na hindi nila naiintindihan yon, parang mas nagiging focus pa

nila yon para mapagalitan yung mga varsity."

If the school cannot provide financial support, what do you think should be an alternative? Why?

"Yung ano lang naman naming mga player, gusto lang namin ng pagintindi. Kasi minsan

inuuna namin yung mga bagay na yon. Kaya para samin, gusto lang naman naming

maintindihan nila kaming mga player, para maihabol namin yung mga kailangang ipasa."
Explanation and Interpretation of Data (For Varsity

Students)

Question #1

The first interviewee told the researcher that they start their training as early as summer break.

From there, they train continuously until the start of the league; everyday including weekends.

The second interviewee on the other hand told the researchers that they do train everyday on

summer break including weekends. Their call time in the morning is 5:30 am and after they take

their lunch, they are required to go back at 1pm for afternoon training.

In addition, the third interviewee told the researchers that they always train, since the start of the

vacation, after class and every weekend. According to him, the varsity players do not have

enough time to rest.

Question #2

The first interviewee told the researchers that he spends about 200 pesos minimum on extra

training days like weekends and vacations. This is because after a long day of training, they all

feel tired and need to eat outside.

The second interviewee on the other hand told the researchers that he spends 70 pesos minimum

everyday if there are no classes.

In addition, the third interviewee told the researchers that the minimum amount of their pocket

money every day is P150. He said that his food, transportation and other expenses are included in

the said amount.

Question #3

The first interviewee told the researchers that the school only provides transportation and food

during games. They are not provided with transportation at all and the school is not consistent in

providing food in times of trainings.

The second interviewee on the other hand told the researchers that they are not provided with

food and transportation for regular training days. He told the researchers that the only time they

were provided with such is during games.

In addition, the third interviewee told the researchers that Pasig Catholic College provides

financial support, but only if there are leagues outside the school but if its just a regular training

day, PCC does not provide anything. According to him, PCC provides their transportation and

food, if and only if there are leagues outside the PCC. But when it comes to money, PCC does

not provide anything.

Question #4

The first interviewee told the researchers that although he himself does not need the financial

assistance as he is already well off, being with his teammates most of the time and spending days

after days with his teammates, he saw that there is definitely a need for a financial assistance

because not all of them are fortunate in terms of finance.

The second interviewee on the other hand told the researchers that there is indeed a need for

financial support because not all varsity players are well off. He also said that because they still

do not have personal income so they still depend on their parents.

In addition, the third interviewee told the researchers that for him, financial support is necessary,

because it can help and motivate the varsity players. But if there is none, it is also okay because

he loves what he’s doing and from the very start, he already knew that PCC does not provide

financial support for the varsity players. Therefore, its okay for him if the school does not

provide financial support but it’s much better if there is one.

Question #5

The first interviewee told the researchers that he is already passionate and determined with his

work because it is truly what he wants and if it is really what a person wants, he doesn’t need

anything in return. However, if there is indeed a financial support, he would feel motivated to

work and will be more passionate with his craft.

The second interviewee on the other hand told the researchers that he will feel extra motivated in

training if there is financial support.

In addition, the third interviewee told the researchers that it can make the varsity players to be

motivated, both academics and sports, because sometimes, varsity players find it difficult to

choose between academics and sports. Sometimes, they fail to comply in academics or sports.

Question #6

The first interviewee told the researchers that the only credit that they get is acknowledgement

from his teachers and classmates. They usually get motivation from them if they played well.

Besides that, they get no more credits.

The second interviewee on the other hand told the researchers that he sometimes gets credits like

additional grades but it is rare as it depends to the teachers. Besides that, there is nothing else.
In addition, the third interviewee told the researchers that they don’t receive any credits or even

plus points in their grades. There are instances that the advisers or professors cannot understand

the situation of a varsity player and sometimes they scold us and use that as a reason.

Question #7

The first interviewee told the researchers that if financial support is not possible, the only thing

he wishes to have is consistency on food and transportation. He said that on weekends and

holidays that the school canteen is not around, they are forced to use their own money.

The second interviewee on the other hand told the researchers that he only wishes a consistent

supply of food as it will lessen their expenses.

In addition, the third interviewee told the researchers that they just want the teachers’

understanding, because sometimes the teachers refuse to accept late requirements because they

fail to recognize their efforts to cope up with their studies and at the same time, being a varsity

player.
Data Gathered (From Coaches)

First interviewee

Mr. Castillo

Coach of Basketball Team

Is there a need to offer financial assistance to student athletes of Pasig Catholic College?

Mahirap kumilos pag walang panggastos.

maghanap ng alternative sources of funds (fund raising, etc.)

sa ibang schools for practice games.”

Second Interviewee

Mr. Huang

Coach of Swimming Team

Is there a need to offer financial assistance to student athletes of Pasig Catholic College?

“Oo. Siguro nasabi na rin ito ng ibang coach na nainterview nyo na, pero ibig sabihin lang

nun pare-pareho kami ng sentiments about this issue.

department (MAPEH/SPORTS DEPARTMENT).

Explanation and Interpretation of Data (For Coaches)

1. Coach Castillo

Mr. Castillo agreed about the said offering of financial assistance to student athletes of

Pasig Catholic College. He said that there are a lot of schools who offered this kind of student

assistance to their student athletes. He also mentioned that this program is really needed because

the said budget isn’t enough to buy the basic necessities needed by the student athletes. In

additional to this, it is hard for them to go to training place or even in the game place because

some of them live in far places. If the said financial assistance was approved to all the varsities

this will be a great help to them for all their trainings. If they have enough funds for this, it will

be easier for them to travel from their home to their training grounds (transportation) and even to

buy for their food and water.

2. Coach Jeffrey Huang

Mr. Huang also agreed about the said financial assistance for all the varsity players. He

also said that all of the coaches have the same sentiments about the said issue. He wants to give

financial assistance to all the varsities because they deserve the said assistance, they are the one

who’s playing for the pride of the school and they are the one who’s sacrificing their efforts and

time in attending the trainings. In additional to that, the said budget were really not enough for

the games and competitions for the Department (MAPEH/SPORTS DEPARTMENT).

Discussion

The researchers chose to conduct this study to aid student athletes who are having problems with

their financial matters.

The researchers conducted few interviews concerning some coaches and student athletes of Pasig

Catholic College Sports Department. They were asked to give and share their insights about the

proposal in order to formulate a ground basis for formulating a Financial Assistance program for

the school’s student athletes, specifically, a monthly allowance to meet their basic needs. Mostly,

the students agreed that there should be a Financial Assistance or monthly allowance solely for

varsity players like them. The common reasons they gave is that the school doesn’t give enough

funds to support their agendas such as tune-up games and formal sports competitions. The school

does provide food and water but only during real games and competitions but whenever it’s just

a regular training day, especially in week-end trainings, they don’t receive their food and water.

Thus, the school is quite inconsistent when it comes to providing basic support to their own

athletes.

Legal Basis

According to The Philippine Star, Pasig City representative Roman Romulo proposed an act

establishing a student assistance program for there is a need for athletic scholarship in the

country. He urged DepEd and CHEd to jointly develop a program where financially

disadvantaged students who excell on sports be given financial assistance. The said proposal was

approved on the 3rd and Final reading of the 15th congress.

Section 1 of Republic Act 6014 clearly states that "it is a national policy to give equal

opportunity to all person who desire to pursue education by extending financial assistance and

who excel in sports).

Psychological Basis

According to Hatch, Thomsen and Waldron, there are two factors of motivation which determine

what motivates an athlete to compete for their own reasons.

When athletes are motivated by their competitive drive to beat peers' performance in the game,

they are more likely to have Intrinsic and Extrinsic motivation. Intrinsic Motivation is defined by

BusinessDictionary as a "Stimulation that drives an individual to adopt or change a behavior for

his or her own internal satisfaction or fulfillment. Intrinsic motivation is usually self-applied, and
springs from a direct relationship between the individual and the situation. It is very important

factor in the design of a learning or training course." Meaning with this kind of motivation, an

athlete will enable himself or herself to focus on improvement and growth with less stress,

pressure and distraction because of his objective to just enjoy what he is doing. This contrast

with extrinsic motivation which involves engaging in a behavior in order to earn external

rewards or avoid punishment. According to Association for Applied Sports Psychology,

"Extrinsic motivation may come from social sources, such as not wanting to disappoint a parent,

or material rewards, such as trophies and college scholarships. Extrinsically motivated athletes

tend to focus on the competitive or performance outcome. An over-emphasis on extrinsic

motivation may lead athletes to feel like their behavior is controlled by the extrinsic rewards. On

the other hand, athletes may continue to feel like they control their own behavior even with the

presence of extrinsic rewards."

Examples of behaviors that are the result of extrinsic motivation includes competing for awards,

for praise and to meet parent's expectations. This kind of motivation can cause pressure, stress

and difficulty to manage failure because of the eagerness to achieve something in exchange for

rewards. These two factors of motivation are important for athletes to maintain because it is to

balance their behavior regardless of their objectives in order for them to compete successfully

and participate well.

Promotion of Schools

Collaborate with other schools

There are different ways to promote a school and one of them is to consider collaborating, to

consider partnering with other schools. For instance, you could try sending informative
information to the local newspaper. Articles that feature advancements in modern education and

the like. You could also conduct live events that promote the importance of good education to

the community where the school belongs.

Publicize the star students

You can also promote your school via your exceptionally talented students who excel in these

areas; sports, academics, arts, etc. You could try featuring them in your school newspaper or at

local community events. This could potentially inspire others to consider enrolling their children

in your school. If they can see or read that you can produce such students, the school's reputation

would surely reach the spotlight it deserves.
