Sailing (Rod Stewart)

 BEFORE LISTENING

This stage can be organised as a competition:

A. What are they doing?

SUGGESTION: Have students work in pairs, looking words up in bilingual dictionaries.
Give 5 points to the pair who gets all correct answers first.

ANSWERS: He’s sailing. It’s flying. He’s dying. They’re crying.

B. Answer these questions (use your imagination!):

SUGGESTION: Brainstorm ideas in the class. Accept Spanish from students for words
they don’t know, and provide the translation for them as you write them down on the
board. Give each pair of students 1 point for each word suggested.

IMPORTANT: No matter what other answers you may get, you “must” get the words in
bold (elicit them from students if necessary!)

1. Where can you sail? In a river / the sea / the ocean.

2. What can you see in the sea? Water / fish / boats / sharks / etc.
3. What can fly? Birds / Planes / Bees / etc.
4. Where can you fly? In the sky.
5. What can you see in the sky? Birds / the sun / the moon / stars / clouds / etc.

Give some prize to the winners!

 WHILE LISTENING

C. Which of the words from exercises A and B can you hear? Tick them!

All the words in bold can be heard in the song.

D. Fill in the blanks:

I am sailing, I am sailing,
Home again, across the sea.
I am sailing stormy waters,
To be near you, to be free.
I am flying, I am flying,
Like a bird, across the sky.
I am flying, passing high clouds
To be near you, to be free.

Can you hear me?

Can you help me
Through the dark time, far away.
I am dying, forever crying
To be with you who can sing.
We’re sailing …
