STANDARD 1: Learner Development

The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning
and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional,
and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging
learning experiences.

With music, everyone starts out at different points. Some kids are able to match pitch
easier than others. As a teacher, one must be able to develop teaching strategies for students who
can match pitch easier and those who cannot. Teachers can use methods like physical actions
that match the lesson, repeating for the class, and asking students to perform in groups.

I feel as if I have some experience with this standard, but not enough to be considered a
master. The only real experience I have had with this standard is the student teaching in some of
the classes. I have had some experience teaching music in show choir as a vocal captain, as well
as teaching music in nonprofessional settings, but I still lack the experience to know how to
teach in different circumstances.

I plan to gain knowledge in this subject by observing other teachers and by using
opportunities in my music classes to learn of different teaching methods. I hope to learn about
what kinds of ways students can learn and what ways I can help them retain information.
