BDA 20303 – MECHANIC OF MACHINES

TUTORIAL BELTING POWER TRANSMISSIONS

1. Calculate the number of times a belt must be wrapped around a post in order
for a force of 100 N to hold a force of 20 kN. The coefficient of friction is 0.3.

2. Calculate the force ratio for a pulley belt on a wheel when it is about to slip
given the coefficient of friction is 0.4 and the angle of lap is 200°.

3. A pulley is tensioned to 800 N whilst stationary. Calculate the tensions in

both sides given that the wheel is 200 mm diameter and 2 kW of power are
being transmitted at 300 RPM.

4. A pulley wheel is 100 mm diameter and transmits 1.5 kW of power at 360

RPM. The maximum belt tension is 1200 N at this point. Calculate the initial
tension applied to the stationary belts.

5. A 60° V-belt use in automobile engine with 100 mm diameter for both
pulleys. The maximum tension the belt can sustain is Tmax = 800 N. The
coefficient of static friction for both pulley is μs=0.25. Find the maximum
possible torque M resisted by the axle before the belt slips over the pulley.
Assume that the system rotate with a constant angular speed.

6. A flat-belt is passes around pulley A of a motor and over a pulley B with a

diameter of 100 mm each. The motor exerts a torque of M = 4 N.m to drive
the system. The coefficient of static friction for both pulley is μs=0.3. Find the
tension Tt and Ts of the flat belt just before it starts moving.
