Artifact- Field Trip assignment from Teaching Scientific Inquiry

Standard #5: Application of Content- The teacher understands how to connect concepts and

use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative

problem solving related to authentic local and global issues.

The artifact that I chose was the Field Trip assignment that I completed in my course

Teaching Scientific Inquiry. With this assignment I had to decide on a place to take students on

a fieldtrip. I had to go in depth and describe the location, the things that they will do on the

fieldtrip, how much the field trip is going to cost, how long the fieldtrip will last and more. This

assignment was a great assignment to really open your eyes and see how much work it takes to

take children on a field trip.

This artifact relates to Intasc standard 5 because it relates to global issues. I chose a

fieldtrip that showed the importance of faming vegetables and fruits. Farming is an extremely

important part of our global and local issues because we always have to have food. Within this

fieldtrip the students get to see the different uses of corn and why corn is important. There are

so many benefits of this field trip when discussing local and global issues. Intasc standard 5 also

states allows the students to engage in critical thinking while allowing them to be creative as

well because they get to harvest the different parts of plants and make apple cider by

themselves.

As a future goal I would like to develop more creative ways to address local and global

issues. I think that sometimes things like that bore children so when they have something

creative and fun to do that actually teaches them about these things, then they tend to pay
more attention. I will reach this goal by following local and global issues through the news and

internet, searching for ways to teach younger students in a way that they will understand.
