STRUCTURAL FIRE, 242 RED RIVER RD, THE

FOUNDRY
14 APRIL 2018

On 14 April 2018, at 4:20 AM, a person walking by the Foundry Restaurant heard an alarm coming
from the building and observed smoke in the interior. 911 was called and Thunder Bay Fire Rescue
Service responded with three pumpers carrying 13 fire fighters. The first arriving unit arrived and
confirmed the callers observations. A second alarm was called which responded another two
pumpers and an Aerial Ladder, bringing another eight fire fighters. An interior attack was commenced
through a front window. The attack crew, with an attack line and breathing apparatus, utilized a
thermal imaging camera which helped them find their way in the structure through the smoke. The
fire was found in the basement. A laundry hamper containing clothing and rags had ignited and
activated the alarm. The fire was contained to the immediate area, causing damage to the ceiling and
side wall. The attack was supported by other crews who provided a water supply, ventilation and
reconnaissance. A search proved no one was in the structure needing rescue. Crews rotated inside
the structure ensuring hot spots were cooled and smoke removal complete. The ministry of Health
officer attended the scene to ensure all food related concerns were handled in accordance with
established procedures. Damage to the restaurant is considered light and it is expected it will reopen
as soon as repairs have been completed. No injuries occurred as a result of this fire.
