Violent Volcanoes

Introduction
A volcano is a mountain that opens
downward to a pool of molten rock
below the surface of the Earth. In
this text you will learn how
volcano eruptions occur, where they
occur, the effect of them, what
warning signs there are, what
precautions you should take and you
will also learn about a famous
volcano eruption.

How Volcano Eruptions Occur

Volcano eruptions occur when the
pressure builds up inside. Magma is
lighter than the solid rock around
it, magma rises and collects in
magma chambers.
Eventually some of the
magma pushes through
vents and fissures in
the Earth’s surface,
then a volcano
eruption occurs. Gases and rock
shoot up through the opening and
spill over or fill the air with
lava fragments. Magma that has
erupted is called lava.

Eruptions Occur
Volcano eruptions occur only in
certain places and do not occur
randomly. Many of the world’s
active volcanoes are located around
the edges of the Pacific Ocean and
they can also occur underwater.
Volcanoes mostly occur in the West
Coast of America’s, East Coast of
Siberia, Japan, the Philippines,
Indonesia and in island chains from
New Guinea to New Zealand.

A Famous Volcano
In 1883, on an island in Indonesia,
a volcano called Krakatau erupted.
It produced one of the largest
explosions ever recorded on Earth
and the blast was
heard almost 5000
kilometres away.

The Effect of a Volcano Eruption

There are many effects that come
from a volcano eruption, physically
and mentally. For
example, in the
Krakatau eruption

villages were destroyed and another
132 were damaged. Not only that,
families can be torn apart,
memories can be ruined and worst of
all some people can have nothing
left apart from the clothes that
they’re wearing.

The Warning Signs that Show a

Volcano is About to Erupt
There are many warning signs that
show a volcano eruption is about to
happen. Most volcanoes give warning
signs weeks or months before they
erupt, for example, rising magma
causes solid rock to break, sending
earthquake signals, there are very
small earthquakes below the
volcano, there is heat and gas
coming from the volcano.
How to Stay Safe Before, During
and After a Volcano Eruption
Staying safe during a volcano
eruption is very important but
knowing how to is just as
important. Here are some ways to
stay safe before an eruption:
 take anything valuable
 get as far away as possible or
if if there is no way of
evacuating, take shelter where
you are
 If you have a basement stay in
there as long as needed

There are also things you can do

way before a volcano eruption:
 creating a plan and discuss it
with your family
 get any of the necessary
equipment and put it in th
eplace you are most likely to
shelter

Staying safe after an eruption is

also very important but not many
people know how to. Listen to local
news stations whenever possible for
information about clean drinking
water, roads and air quality.

Conclusion
As you can see volcanoes are very
dangerous and they can cause lots
of damage but there are also many
ways to stay safe before, during
and after. So if you ever get
yourself caught in the area of a
volcano eruption make sure you
follow these steps to make sure
you’re the safest you can be.
