Robot fish

MIT is a famous university. It is in America.

MIT researchers built a new underwater robot. It looks like a

fish.

The researchers call their robot Sofi. This is short for soft(ware)
fish.

The fish robot is 47 centimeters long. It has cameras in its head.

The robot goes down to a depth of 18 meters. A diver operates

it.

The diver has a remote control. It sends sounds to the robot.

 The sounds are
instructions. The robot
decodes them. Sound
travels through water.

Now, scientists use

ROVs (remotely
operated vehicles).
They are like mini
submarines.

A ROV is noisy. Cables

connect it to a ship. ROVs frighten the fish away.

Sofi is silent. It does not scare the fish. The robot will help
scientists to study and record fish.
