Universal Design for Learning (UDL):The text is represented in multiple ways, in

Ebook form, in audiobook form, and in print form. Students can express
themselves in multiple ways, through writing and drawing, or reciting their
story. The students are engaged in multiple ways, through reading the print or
Ebook, listening to the audiobook, then creating their own illustrated book. The
audiobook can help reach ELLs and visually impaired, as well as auditory
learners. Visual learners would benefit from the print and Ebook formats.

Lesson idea implementation :The teacher will give a brief lesson on the
definition and roles of authors and illustrator with a large copy of one of Eric
Carle’s books. Students will be shown the importance of both authors and
illustrators in telling a story. The students will then access the print, Ebook, and
audiobook on the Scribd app. It provides access to hundreds of thousands of
Ebooks and audiobooks for a small monthly fee. Students will listen to the
audiobook while following along in the print or Ebook. The entire lesson should
last about an hour, or slightly less.

Students will later have the opportunity to demonstrate understanding by

creating their own illustrated book. Lesson will be differentiated by providing
assistance to those who need it, letting some students dictate their book to
teacher. Lesson wil be concluded by summarizing ideas of author and
illustrator and having a brief Q and A discussion session on the role of both in
this book.

Reflective Practice: I think the Ebook and audiobook would greatly impact
student understanding of authors and illustrators. Being provided multiple
formats of the text would help all students. Further extensions would lead to
further explorations of more books, Ebooks, and audiobooks of a more complex
nature, when appropriate. Other technology tools that could be used are word
processing programs for writing their books and drawing software for
illustrating. They could also create their own audiobooks with any number of
recording apps.
