CLOUD COMPUTING
Now Mainstream
We want our clients to remain in the lead when it comes to high-ROI leverage of new
technology, and that’s why we continuously monitor upcoming technologies.
In 1995, a technology analyst named Jackie Fenn was credited as naming the expec-
tations cycle for new technologies, called the Hype Cycle, which is the typical wave of
expectations that technologies go through as they mature. Gartner has been issuing the
annual Gartner Hype Cycle for over a decade.

with comparable or superior performance and security.
The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) featured at the peak of Gartner’s Hype Cycle
in 2015 and refers to the growing trend for internet-enabled devices to interact directly
with myriad other computing systems to automate monitoring, management and con-

Prescriptive (local rule) calculation and

Each class and Harmonized Common BEFORE
Structure Rule (HCSR) requires prescrip-
tive calculation and FEM analysis for ship
structure. SHI developed an interface,
which can create FEM model in KR analy-
sis tool (Hull-Scan) and extract the infor-
mation for the class rule calculation with
KR (Korean Register). The geometries and
properties retrieved from the Smart 3D
model can save the modeling labor hours
for prescriptive rule check. Also, this in-
terface reduces the time of total analysis
and calculation of labor hours.

Implementation of one database from

early design to production
SHI used one model database for both
the structure and outfitting; but that was
only for the production model. Now, SHI
has accomplished the real, one unified da-
tabase from the basic/detail design to the
production design with this new AHD
process. The Split Root System (SRS)
AFTER
makes the designers split the zone-based
big modeling into the block unit. This
means that the user doesn’t need to con-
cern the production design at the early
stage of the modeling. After splitting the
big root parts into the small root parts, the
production designers can input the pro-
duction information (bevel, margin, etc.)
for their responsible blocks.
Vice President Mr. Sungho Ha, who is
in charge of the hull structure design, said,
“SHI believes that this new process will
bring innovative design. With the Smart
3D enhancements and the new AHD de-
sign process, SHI has been able to reduce
overall design cycle time by two months.
With additional process improvements,
we expect to further reduce design cycle
for a 30 percent savings. SHI appreciates
Intergraph’s aggressive cooperation to
make a success of AHD last year.” ■

“Samsung Heavy Industries, one of the
