Lab 2: Open Loop Speed Regulation of a three phase Induction Motor.

Objectives

 To understand the principle of variable frequency speed control of a three phase

Induction machine.
 To learn and understand how to program the DL 2309a variable frequency speed
control available in the power engineering laboratory.
 To obtain and display visual inverter leg trigger signals on the dual beam
oscilloscope.

EQUIPMENT:

 Three phase induction motor with a squirrel cage rotor

 Tachometer
 Dual beam Oscilloscope
 Lab leads

Introduction & background theory
In the industrial field, the most widely used motors are the AC induction motors because
they are reliable, sturdy and inexpensive relatively. Over the years mechanical, hydraulic
and electrical systems have been used for speed control and only more recently electronic
systems have been implemented.

The industry requirement has always been the possibility of adjusting with ease of the
speed of the three phase induction motor through electric or electronic drives. This
requirement can now be fulfilled thanks to special purpose ICs including all the required
functions for a speed regulation system to be realised. The type of inverter you will use in
this lab is the current source inverter DL 2309a.
Pre-Lab Exercise
1. Draw a labelled block diagram of the current source inverter that you will use for this
experiment and explain its principle of operation. (10)
2. Explain why the current source inverter is not commonly used (i.e. its limitations) (2)

Procedure
1. Connect the motor to in star then to the regulator as shown in the figure below.

2. Make the following settings on the DL 2309a:
 Set both the key and LOOP switches to ‘off’ positions.
 Set JOG switch to ‘L’
 Set P1 TO ‘0’

3. Press and hold both (▲) & (▼) keys simultaneously & then switch on the mains
supply by closing the rear switch. Release the two keys and press (M) to display
(rdY) for remote control.
4. Set the frequency control from potentiometer P1 and the desired motor frequency
range by programming the digital control:
 Parameter P1 = (0 Hz) minimum operating frequency
 Parameter P2 = (50 Hz) maximum operating frequency
5. Set the inverter maximum output frequency at which maximum voltage is reached
according to motor specific characteristics (Motor 1.1 kW/220V/50Hz):
 Parameter P7 = (50 Hz) Base frequency.
 Call the supervisor to verify your settings before you switch on.
6. Turn ‘On’ the switch key, push ‘start’ button and vary the speed signal by adjusting
the potentiometer P1 to 7 different speeds in 200r/min increments. Record your
measurements in the table below.

7. Connect the dual beam oscilloscope to display the drive waveforms of leg R
(obtainable between test points R1 & R2). Save the waveforms in your memory
stick.
8. Using the oscilloscope, obtain the waveforms of V1 & V3.
9. Using the oscilloscope, obtain the line-line voltage waveforms of L1 & L2. Finally,
obtain the line current waveform on the oscilloscope. Save the waveforms in your
memory stick.

1. Please use a word processor to typeset your report.
2. Please write the following info on the front page of your report:
 Course code & name
 Experiment name & number
 Your Programme of study
 Your name and student number
3. Your report should include at least the following sections:

 Objectives
 Introduction
 Pre-lab exercise answers
 Experimental results
 Analysis of results – Comment on the waveforms obtained
 Conclusion

NB: clearly outline the procedure and be warned that simply copying the lab instructions will
attract low marks. All sections in (3) above shall be in reporting format.
