Abstract— Traffic jams had become a routine at the S- shaped curve near
Kanavirayanagudda. Road vehicles used to be lined up for several kilometers on either side
of national highway, due to the higher gradient near the railway level crossing. To avoid and
clear the bottleneck, a proposal was mooted by the National Highway Authority of India
(NHAI) to develop the road to avoid the s-curve in the valley and also the railway track. A
tunnel through the hill, adjacent to the Tungabhadra dam was constructed. Twin road
tunnels carrying 3-lane traffic each, are “D” shaped with finished height of 8.50m and width
of 14.50m wide and about 265m long.
