Facilities: Birchland Park Gym Number of students: 33 Grade: 8th

Unit/Theme: Track & Field

Equipment: Turbo Javelins (5), Shot Puts (3), Cones (15), Discus (3)

Focus of Lesson: Track & Field Throwing Events

 CHCF + National Standard & Grade Level Standard # + Task # + Assessment

Student Performance Objectives (SPO) + M

By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

(C) Explain at least 2 reasons during the closure why it is important to know when to retrieve the throwing
equipment. (N.S.G.L.O S2.M13.8, MCHCF 2.14, closure)

(P) Perform at least 2 out of the 3 skill cues at every station by the end of the lesson. (N.S.G.L.O S1.M21.8, MCHCF
2.2, Activity 1, 2,3)

(A) Be conscious of other students’ throwing path in all activities by staying within the boundaries and listening to
the teachers instructions. (N.S.G.L.O S4.M7.8, MCHCF 2.12, Activity 1,2,3)

Check each objective – is it specific? Is it achievable? Is it developmentally appropriate?

Teacher Performance Objectives – During the lesson the teacher will:

1. Provide at least 1 positive specific and 1 corrective specific piece of feedback to each student throughout the
lesson
2. Assess as many students as possible, using the skill cues that were provided at the beginning of the class.

Special Considerations –

1. Many students may have experience playing baseball or softball but as the instructors, you need to reiterate
that these sports are not the same, for example, throwing a javelin is not the same as pitching a baseball.
2. Always consider safety, for example, for when the students are in a line for the javelin, make sure you are telling
the students when to “retrieve” or when to “cease fire”. For the discus and shot putt, you need to make sure the
students that are not throwing for either, that they need to behind the boundary cones of the area that the
students are throwing in.

Time Sequence of lesson Organization

0-2 min Transition: Students will change and come into gym for
attendance. They will go their squat spots on the gym floor.

Greeting: Good Morning everybody, let’s see what we have

planned for today!

2-3 min Review Agenda:

AGENDA
Mr. Q, Ms. S, Mr. G
9/16 6th Grade
Objective: I will be able to throw turbo jav, discus, and shot put
Warm Up: Stretch then play catch with a partner with foam
balls.
Activity 1: Shot Put
Activity 2: Javelin
Activity 3: Discus
Closure: Review Lesson Objectives

3:00-3:30 Transition: Students will stand up and beginning dynamic

stretching

Warm Up: Dynamic Stretching / Throwing Foam Ball With

3:30-8:00 min Partner

Transition: Students will then return the balls and sit back down
8:00-8:30 min into their squads.

Informing:
8:30-12 min ● Skill Cues - Introduced before each activity
● Demonstration: Demonstration before each activity.
● Rules - Go signal = Ready Go, Stop signal =
Stop/Whistle.
● Boundaries - Remain in the coned area, engaged in the
activities at all times, in case of emergency call your
Teacher over to you. Each station is going to have cones
with the number of feet on how far they are throwing
either the discus, shot putt, and javelin.
● Safety - Stay behind the boundaries while other
students are throwing, Only retrieve items when
teacher instructs the students to do so.
12:00-12:30
Transition: Students will line up and we will number them
either 1,2, or 3. The ones will go together, the twos will go
together, and the threes will go together. Then the students will
follow the teacher they are assigned to first with their group.
13-23 min
Activity 1: Shot Put
Students will learn how to throw a shotput and then throw the
shot put. The students will take turns throwing while giving
X X
each other space so they don’t accidentally hit each other. The
students will wait for my command to retrieve the shot puts. T

Informing: Skill cues; S S SSSS

keep shot put against the chin and
push forward to throw. X X
Squat and rotate body,
point opposite foot at the target.

Demonstration: Mr. Q will have a student demonstrate using

the skill cues he just described.

Extension Up: Students can try throwing the shot put with the
correct windup to generate more power with the throw.

Extension Down: Students could use a softball instead if they

are having difficulty with the shot put.

Transition: From the Activity 1 to the next activity. X S S S S S X

23-33 min

Activity 2(Station 2): Javelin

X X
Informing:
To properly grip remember this: have the javelin lay across the
hand, then grip the javelin with the two or three fingers and X X
have the thumb come across (preferably the middle finger
down), then have the last 1 or 2 fingers support the javelin so
you can aim where you are throwing.
When throwing the javelin: feet and body are squared to X X
target with the feet staggered, (left foot up front if righty, vice
versa for lefty), the javelin is thrown properly and held above
the head with the elbow facing target, and then have the
opposite foot step with the throw and follow through to the
target.

Students will stand in a horizontal line, having their shoulders

lined up with one another. There will be 5 students throwing at
a time spaced out as far as the coned boundaries go. Before the
students throw, Mr.G will show them how to properly grip the
javelin. Then under my instruction I will allow the 5 students to
go while the other 5 students watch from 5 feet behind them.
After the 5 students throw their javelins, they will wait till i say
to retrieve the javelin for safety purposes. The students will
know how far they threw because of the cones that will be set
up 10 feet apart. The students will retrieve their javelins and
bring it to the next person in line.
Demonstration: Mr. G will show the proper mechanics behind
the javelin throw while performing all the skill cues. After
demonstrating, Mr.G will ask 5 students to step up and try
throwing the javelin.

Extension Up: Students will take a couple steps then throw the
javelin.

Extension Down: Students will throw tennis balls instead of

javelins.

Transition: Students will put the equipment back in its original

position and switch to the next station.
33-43 min

Activity 3: Discus

X X
Informing:
Students will learn how to throw a discus. The first thing they
will do is line up within at least 3 to 4 feet between them.
Before giving the students a discus, they will practice with
frisbees first but using the discus grip. While they are warming
up with this activity, the students are going to be given S
commands for when to throw these frisbees and when to X T X
retrieve them. For example, “begin to throw” and “all clear to SSSSSSS
to retrieve”. The students will only do this for 2 or 3 times. They
will then begin to line up one by one to practice throwing the
discus. While this is being done, the students that are in line
need to be waiting outside the boundary cones of the area the
one student is throwing in.

Skill Cues:
● Gripping the discus: with dominant hand, fingers
spread out.
● Stance: Shoulders faced towards the field that the
students are aiming. If they are a righty, left foot in
front. Lefty, right foot in front.
● Release: At eye level.
● Throwing motion: Feet are stationary. The turn is all in
the hips transferring your weight from your back leg to
your front. Arm that is holding the discus goes from low
to high.

Demonstration: Ms. S will demonstrate the proper grip and

throw of the discus using all of the proper skill cues given during
the introduction to this activity.

Extension Up: Students can attempt throwing the discus with

the entire correct form and steps.

Extension Down: Students may go back to throwing with a

frisbee instead of the discus if they are more comfortable.
Transition: First two groups will gather around in a semi circle
for a miniclosure. The final group will collect the equipment and
then arrive in a semi circle for a miniclosure.
43-45
Miniclosure:
“How did everyone feel about throwing the discus? Especially
to the students that had never thrown one before.”
“Could any of you name a skill cue used to throw a discus?”
“Great job today everyone!”

Transition: Students will collect their equipment from their

station and gather together for a class closure.

45-50 min Closure: TTT

S S
● “What are the skill cues for throwing a javelin, shot
putt, and throwing a discus?” SSSSSSSSSSS
● “Why is it important that we are all retrieving either the
shot putt, javelin, or discus when the field is clear?”
● “What was your favorite throwing event out of the
three that you had learned today?”
● Great job today everyone!
