FIND THE DEFINITION AND THE FUNCTION OF THE

FOLLOWING TERMS.

CAN
DEFINITION : Use to indicate that someone has ability or opportunity to do
something.
 Don’t worry about me, I can take care of myself.
 My trainer says I can win the race if I really work hard.

COULD
DEFINITION : Past simple of “can” , use to talk about what someone or
something was able or allowed to do.
 When I was younger I could stay up all night and not get tired.
 I could see by the look on their faces that something was wrong.

WILL
DEFINITION : Expressing probability or expectation about something in the
present.
 They will be miles away by now.
 You will regret it when you are older.

WOULD
DEFINITION : We use would when you are saying what someone believed,
hope or expected to happen. ( past tense for will )
 No one believed he would actually kill himself.
 I don’t think he would take such a decision.
SHOULD
DEFINITION : Something you ought to do or something that is a right thing
to do.
 Maybe we should go home.
 She should discuss all this with Alex.

MUST
DEFINITION : Something that has to be done.
 The next one that whispers must come out and stand in the middle of
the floor.
 She must changed her clothes during the night.

ALTHOUGH
DEFINITION : Use for introducing a statement that makes your main
statement seem surprised.
 Although he’s got a good new job now, he still complains.
 Although tom is sick, he still want to go to school.

THEREFORE
DEFINITION : To introduce a logical result or conclusion.
 Muscle cells need lots of fuel and therefore burn a lot of calories.
 Therefore many house need to be built.
EVEN THOUGH
DEFINITION : To indicate that the particular fact does not make the rest of
your statement untrue.
 Even though he was bigger, he never looked down on me.

DEFINITION : Except for someone or something.
 I hardly know anyone in the village apart from William and you.

DEFINITION : Besides something or besides something means in addition
to it.
