Material Selection

Selecting the manufactured material is very important and there are several things that need to be
considered. One of these is the environment safety and its impact on it. Some materials affect the
environment negatively and it is the engineer’s responsibility to take that into consideration before
choosing the manufactured material. Moreover, the physical, mechanical and chemical properties
are also considered before selecting the manufactured material. Lastly is the appearance of the
design. For our prototype the aluminum was selected for its high durability, strength and
machinability.

Machining operation
Conventional milling machine
Milling is the machining process of using rotary cutters to remove material from a workpiece by
advancing (or feeding) in a direction at an angle with the axis of the tool. Spindle speed is set by
turning the speed crank on the right side of the spindle. The spindle must be on and rotating to
adjust the speed. In our project the milling machine was used to create holes for the bolts on the
sides of the Vice. The parameters of the vice were taken as the same one in the CNC milling
machine with slight increase in the length.
