Unit: ____Volume of Sphere, Cone, and Cylinder_ 8.

2 Day 4 Lesson _

Today’s Outcome/Essential Question(s): How can I find the volume of a cone?

Material(s): pencil, paper, calculator and math journal

Objective: When students are asked to find volume of a cone, the student will apply the area of
a circle 8 out of 10 times correctly.
Students will be able to…

CONNECT to previous Previously students have:

work
• Learned/reviewed area of a circle
• Learned how to find volume of a cylinder
• Video shows students the correlation between volume of a cylinder cone and
sphere.

TEACH • Review "What do you think the formula for volume of a cone may be?"
• Model the formula volume of a cone (3 cones can fit in a cylinder and why)
Teaching point/ question • Notes 8.2 volume of a cone (Appendix F)
and what teacher will • Practice problems for notes in math journals
say, do, model

ACTIVE • Students will build with the magformers as they finish with notes
ENGAGEMENT • Turn and talk with elbow partner while working on practice problems
• Circulate for mathematical reasoning while students work, addressing
Student practice of
teaching point with concerns as I hear them arise
teacher support (e.g. • Students can use this time to work on homework giving time for formative
teacher asks guiding assessment
questions, students
turn/talk or stop/jot,
teacher charts responses)

INDEPENDENT • Homework practice in the book will be given. Pg 343 #1-21

PRACTICE • As concerns arise with individual groups, we will reference the video and how the
liquid fit into individual shapes
Send students off to • Reference the correlation between cylinder and cone with the magformers
independent work
• Those students having a difficult time applying pi, we will look back at the area
(teacher confers and/or
works with small guided formula
groups) • Khan academy at home for practice, Volume of a cylinder and cone

CLOSING/SHARE • Whole class activity, I will select random students to answer step by step, 3
problems, before we leave for the day.
Review teaching point to • We will follow up this lesson with 8.1/8.2 concept quiz on Day 5
reinforce learning and • Following the quiz, we will move on to Discovery day of Volume of a sphere
assess understanding
