Research of Transitional Housing
Transitional housing is designed to help homeless people. It is for a limited time period – from two weeks to up to two years.
“Transitional housing provides people with help after a crisis such as homelessness or domestic violence” (Find Transitional and Sober
Housing). There are over 5,169 transitional housing locations in the United States (Find Transitional and Sober Housing).
For this assignment, I chose The Harbour located in Park Ridge, Illinois. The address is 1440 Renaissance Drive Suite 240, Park
Ridge, IL 60068, and the phone number is 847-297-8540. “The Harbour is a 501(c)3 organization providing emergency shelter,
transitional housing, and supportive services to youth aged 12-21 and who are at risk of becoming homeless, or who are experiencing
homelessness in the north and northwest Chicago suburbs” (Emergency Shelter and Housing Support for Youth). The program works with
the young and their families to stabilize their relationships and ensure that they receive the necessary care. The shelter’s programs also
“prevent family violence and child abuse by providing crisis intervention and conflict resolution designed to strengthen the ability of
youth and families to engage, feel supported, see progress and come to a resolution” (Find Transitional and Sober Housing).
The Harbour's goal is to “help girls locate a safe and stable environment, preferably home, with a plan designed to maintain
safety, family functioning, and educational stability” (Emergency Shelter and Housing Support for Youth).
Girls with children receive parenting support to promote bonding between the parent and the child. Residents “participate in an 8-
hour curriculum on financial literacy with groups throughout the year on topics such as credit management, identity theft, banking, and
taxes” (Emergency Shelter and Housing Support for Youth). They also receive support on developing a spending plan and coaching
sessions on budgeting and saving. This is very important, because many of the residents have credit issues. Education is important, and
that is why The Harbour “supports youth as they graduate high-school and assists them in exploring post-secondary options”
(Emergency Shelter and Housing Support for Youth). Other needs for a young woman staying at the shelter are furniture, food, and
safety, which are provided from the shelter for a limited time. Last year, a donation from The Pajama Program made possible for 5
residents to furnish their full house with new furniture (Blitz).
Every year, The Harbour hosts an annual gala, where sponsors, staff, and residents can meet and have fun. The Harbour relies
on donations and grants from the government, and all the money goes toward the programs that they offer. The next photo shows
their 2016 financial information.

Concept Statement
This project will try to accomplish a peaceful space. A great way to do that is to
use a color that is associated with calmness and unity. A blue monochromatic
color scheme will aim to achieve that. The use of desaturated colors helps with
soothing not only the eyes but also the body. The primary color will be beige,
which will incite motion and change and joy and excitement.

which best represents the Art Deco style. Each piece of complements each other

Justification
The most dominant elements of the design for this space are color and pattern. The blue
color and the geometric patterns that were chosen are the elements of design that define the
Art Deco style. A subdominant principle of design is the way harmony was achieved by
making sure all elements are tied together. The concept is supported by using elements and
principles of design to create a peaceful space.
The design reflects the culture and diversity of the client who will occupy the space by
creating harmony. Each piece of furniture complements each other through similarities in
fabric, style, and finish. The furniture selected meets the needs of the client both
aesthetically and functionally. The furniture selection is modern with art deco touches. The
fabrics selected are both durable and easy to maintain, meeting the needs of the women and
children living in the transitional home.
The products selected are both durable and easy to maintain, which means less of use hard
chemicals. The paint has an extremely strong finish and is zero VOC, which creates a
healthier environment Making sure that the furniture and other items are durable means less.
When designing the layout of the apartments, ADA requirements for two of the apartments
were taken into an account. Every bedroom has a operable window, which is an egress code.
Reflection
The biggest thing that I learned in this class is time management. Because this is an
online course, the time provided was very little and the material was the same as a
regular class, I had to learn to better manage my time with work and school. This is an
important quality to have, because in real life, projects move in different speeds and
stages, and learning to manage that properly is a very useful skill. Another quality that I
learned is being able to quickly come up with a solution to a problem. For example, I had
trouble figuring out the placements of some of the apartments and furniture as well. But
after a few tries, I learned to quickly figure out a better solution. An lastly, budgeting. For
this project it was important to keep a small budget, because money were donated.
Choosing a durable furniture with an affordable price was a challenge, but I’m proud of
my selections.
I only worked in a team for one assignment, and the only thing that I can say is that
splitting the work is time-saver. It was very easy to communicate with my teammate, and
that brought to a productive assignment, which was completed very quickly. This is very
relatable to my future career, because tasks should not take a long time to complete. If
not, the more time you spend on a task, the more you get back-tracked with other tasks.
